58 years ago, the Scudetto of the first star
Legends
— May 15th 2024On 15 May 1966, 'Grande Inter' secured the Club's tenth league title
58 years separated the Club's founding (in 1908) and the clinching of the tenth Scudetto in the 1965/66 season. And 58 years on from that campaign, the Nerazzurri recently won their second star, much to the delight of all those Nerazzurri fans who packed the streets of Milano to celebrate a wonderful triumph.
Many things have changed in those 58 years, but the amazing support has remained the same. As was also the case this year, when goals from Acerbi and Thuram sealed victory away to AC Milan, the Nerazzurri clinched their first star at San Siro. Almost 60 years ago, however, Inter were the home team when they took on Lazio. And the Nerazzurri ran out 4-1 winners, thus securing yet another trophy for a Grande Inter side that dominated in Italy and Europe for almost a five-year period.
Goals from Suarez and Mazzola, a Governato own goal and Domenghini's finish sent the Inter faithful into raptures, topping off a legendary era. A team led by the Magician Helenio Herrera and packed with champions and heroes who managed to win three Scudetto titles, two European Cups and two Intercontinental Cups in the space of four seasons. The first star was the culmination of an amazing journey.
It was a season where Inter went on the hunt for their third consecutive European Cup. Unfortunately, the Nerazzurri were eliminated by Real Madrid in the semi-finals, but, on the domestic front, they triumphed again. Inter suffered just four defeats on the way to the Scudetto title and had the best attack (70 goals scored) and best defence (just 28 goals conceded). Giacinto Facchetti, who had just come second in the Ballon d'Or, bagged ten league goals, while Angelo Domenghini scored twelve. Then there was Sandro Mazzola, who took centre stage with 19 goals and his iconic celebration - arms aloft - after finding the net against Lazio.
58 years ago, the class, athleticism and intelligence displayed by one of the strongest football teams of all time paved the way to a historic Scudetto. The Scudetto of the first star, which was sewn on the Nerazzurri shirt the following campaign. And 58 years later, another one is about to join it.
