Hellas Verona 0 - 6 Inter
Team
— May 3rd 2023The Nerazzurri playing their 33rd fixture of the Serie A season
It all happened for Inter within five minutes against Lazio: from the 78th to the 83rd minute, goals from Lautaro and Gosens turned the match on its head, before it was sealed with a third in the 90th minute. Against Verona, even less time was needed to secure all three points. In the 31st minute came Gaich's own goal, then in 60 seconds between the 36th and 37th minutes, two more arrived: Calhanoglu's wonder goal and Dzeko's precise left-footer. This put Inter firmly in control against Hellas, on an evening that was topped off in the second half thanks to Lautaro (two goals) and Dzeko. Six-nil at the Bentegodi, a third consecutive victory, a perfect performance of great authority and class. Gaich's own goal set things in motion, then came some lovely goals, the result of so much quality, from individuals and from the team. A beautiful Inter showing, who climb to 60 points and into fourth place, pulling away from AC Milan and Roma (Saturday's opponents), who were both held to a draw.
It was clear very early on how the match would play out: Inter in control. The first few minutes went by without anything of much note taking place, due to a compact Verona who only allowed one chance, a Dzeko header from a set piece that was well saved. Handanovic had to make a smart stop himself to deny Verdi, with the hosts relying on counter attacks to trouble Inter. But the Nerazzurri’s dominance grew, and around the half an hour mark there were chances everywhere. Montipò did his best impression of Superman and in just over a minute he pulled off a series of incredible saves, which kept the score at 0-0: he flew around to save from Dzeko, D'Ambrosio and De Vrij, with Inter increasingly ramping up the pressure.
The goal seemed inevitable and it arrived thanks to Adolfo Gaich: on the dive, his header sent the ball into his own net after a dangerous cross from Dimarco. The breakthrough was made, Verona attempted to react quickly and almost did so when Hein found space for a header in the box. Inter were playing with confidence, and then came Hakan Calhanoglu's extraordinary goal. In the 36th minute, the Turk hit an incredible right-footer, an unstoppable shot from 25 yards that flew into the top corner. Sixty seconds later, Inter found the net again: Mkhitaryan won the ball, Lautaro provided the assist, and Dzeko poked home on his left foot. In an instant, it went from 0-0 to 0-3. A trio of goals that came thanks to some overwhelming football. Calhanoglu and Dzeko back on the scoresheet: encouraging signs ahead of some important matches.
The home side were struggling, but nearly got back into the match through Lazovic. Inter then put an end to the match once and for all. They did so at the start of the second half, thanks to Brozovic who won the ball back in a dangerous area. A show of sheer desire and determination. Marcelo found Lautaro who, with a very deft touch, delightfully chipped over Montipò to make it four and reach 96 goals in the Nerazzurri shirt, becoming the 9th all-time scorer in the Nerazzurri's history in Serie A. However, Inter were not done yet: Edin Dzeko grabbed his second of the evening, with another accurate left-footed finish, which came after a great bit of work from Acerbi, who claimed a deserved assist. At 5-0 up the game was virtually over, even with 30 minutes to play. Inzaghi continued to make changes, Verona tried desperately to get out of the match with something. But Inter did not drop off for a moment. And in the 92nd minute, the final minute of stoppage time, Lautaro got the cherry on top with his second of the night and his 97th goal for the Nerazzurri. A ball that he lost control of, then won back, before a left-footed effort crept under Montipò and crowned a perfect evening. 0-6: game, set and match.
0-6, game, set and match.
