MILAN - The Nerazzurri played 57 games in their treble-winning season. Just in Serie A, our side scored 75 goals, each the result of battles on the pitch, moments of magic and tactical genius planned out in detail before.
When looking at the assist tables in our history, Douglas Sisenando Maicon has his own special spot. In Serie A alone, our Brazilian provided eleven decisive passes for his teammates, still today holding on to his record as the Nerazzurri player to have provided the most assists in a single league campaign since Serie A returned to 20 teams. Behind our Brazilian, a selfless footballer who was always ready to put the team first earns a mention, with Samuel Eto’o on six assists, level with Wesley Sneijder.

Our Dutch playmaker never did better in a single campaign across Europe’s Top 5 leagues in his career, but what was even more impressive was his work to take the Nerazzurri to the Champions League final in Madrid. He provided six assists for his teammates throughout the tournament, including that delectable through ball to slice open the defence at Stamford Bridge and help Eto’o score one of the most important goals of the year, or his slide-rule pass to play in Milito for our Argentinian’s first goal in the final. Since 2003/04, Xavi in ‘08/09 and Ryan Giggs in ‘06/07 (seven each) remain the only two midfielders to have provided more assists than Wesley Sneijder in a single Champions League campaign.
