Famous and fantastic finishes: the goalfest of the 1989/90 season

MILAN – Inter vs. Atalanta is a fixture which looks set to be filled with goals, and not only because this Saturday sees two of the top three most prolific teams of the season so far face one another. Conte’s Inter sit top of the table on 45 points, having scored 39 goals and boasting an in-form Romelu Lukaku in attack, Inter’s best scorer from his first 18 appearances in the era of three points for a win. The clash between the two sides is a fixture which has often been fought out blow by blow, with seven goals having been scored in two matches in history. For the most recent of these you have to look back three seasons, with the oldest example taking place thirty years ago.

It was the beginning of the ‘90s. Trapattoni’s Inter were back at the top of Serie A for the new decade, having won a record-breaking Scudetto in a year that ended with a Super Cup win and the anticipation of a challenge for the first UEFA Cup, with the quarter-final match coming against Atalanta themselves.

The league match against the side from Orobia was the game that opened the decade for the Nerazzurri, but this fixture went down in history due to the seven goals scored by Trapattoni’s Nerazzurri. The first celebration came from Bergomi, who opened the scoring after just six minutes of play. Just 180 seconds later it was Matthaus’ flying right foot which added a second. The first half also saw wondergoals from Baresi and Berti. The second half began with an own goal from Ferri, followed by some great work by both Klinsmann and Serena, our number 11 creating our fifth and the German legend dispatching the final two.

INTER 7-2 ATALANTA, 25 March 1990 Scorers: 6' Bergomi, 9' Matthaus, 24' Baresi, 27' Berti, 46' O.G. Ferri, 59' Serena A., 63' and 70' Pen. Klinsmann, 73' Nicolini
