PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS
At 20:00 CET (22:00 AST) on Wednesday 18 January, the 35th edition of the Supercoppa Italiana will be played at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh. It'll be the 234rd time that Inter and Milan have faced each other in all competitions. So far, there have been 85 Nerazzurri wins compared to 79 Rossoneri victories; 69 draws complete the picture. The one and only time the sides have met in the Supercoppa was in 2011, with Milan winning 2-1.
The upcoming match will be Inter's eleventh involvement in the Supercoppa Italiana. The Nerazzurri have won the trophy on six occasions and are the current holders having defeated Juventus last season.
EXTRA TIME
In their previous ten involvements in the Supercoppa Italiana, Inter have played extra time on four occasions, winning the trophy each time. In three of these encounters, the Nerazzurri emerged victorious within 120 minutes: in 2005 against Juventus, in 2006 against Roma and last season with another victory over the Bianconeri. Inter have won the Supercoppa on penalties once, coming out on top in the shootout against Roma at San Siro in 2008.
NERAZZURRI RECORD HOLDERS
The two players with the most Supercoppa Italiana appearances in an Inter shirt are Javier Zanetti and Dejan Stankovic, both of whom featured in the competition seven times during their playing careers. The former Serbian midfielder is the all-time joint appearance record holder in the Supercoppa: nine involvements, level with Buffon.
The top Nerazzurri goalscorer in the competition is Samuel Eto'o. The Cameroonian bagged three goals in the Supercoppa, the first of which came against Lazio in 2009 on his Inter debut. In 2010, Eto'o bagged a brace as the Nerazzurri beat Roma 3-1 to win the trophy for the fifth time.
Mario Balotelli, who netted in Inter vs. Roma in 2008, is the youngest scorer in Supercoppa history: at the time, the Italian striker was 18 years and 12 days old.
COACHES
Simone Inzaghi has won the Supercoppa Italiana on three occasions, twice with Lazio and once with Inter. Only Marcello Lippi and Fabio Capello, both with four Supercoppa titles, have done better.
REFEREE
The referee for Milan vs. Inter will be Fabio Maresca.
Maresca will be assisted by Alassio and Baccini, with Chiffi performing the role of fourth official. Di Paolo and Abisso will oversee VAR, while Lo Cicero has been assigned as the reserve assistant referee.
