A really difficult one to digest. Inter's draw away at Sampdoria was a host of regrets, because the amount of goal chances created by Inzaghi's team was enormous. 25 shots, 1.71 expected goals, 16 shots from inside the penalty area. Chances aplenty: an aggressive start, a very well fought first half, then a more difficult second half, albeit with plenty of offensive game play. And then the final attempts: Acerbi first, Lautaro at the death. All examples of a bad night, which proved Stankovic's Samp right: shrewd, careful, compact. The 0-0 draw at the Ferraris brings Inter to 44 points in the league, with the next fixture scheduled against Udinese at San Siro on Saturday.
13 shots and 19 touches in the opponent's area with over 62% ball possession. Inter's first half is captured by the numbers, so striking that you can't believe the 0 in their goal tally. Yes, 0-0 after 45 minutes of Nerazzurri onslaught. So much game, so many shots, so many tears and so many chances: the real sin of the first 45 minutes is, precisely, the goal that never came. Inter had the right ideas. Up front, Lukaku and Lautaro look for each other, Gosens and Darmian help a lot with their forays on the flanks, the three Nerazzurri midfielders created chances with every action.
After four minutes, Inter already had three shots on the board: Lukaku immediately engaging Audero, then Mkhitaryan threatened his goal from the outside of the box, and finally Lautaro with a shot down the middle. Thus began the hunt for the three points, and it continued with Calhanoglu's effort, Darmian's crosses, Lautaro's, Mkhitaryan's bursts, Skriniar's strike. All chasing a goal that didn't come and with an eye on Samp, capable on a couple of occasions of putting some pressure on Onana, especially with initiatives on the right: Zanoli with balls in, Lammers and Gabbiadini in the box, inspired by Djuricic, troubled Onana in a couple of circumstances, without the Nerazzurri goalkeeper having to intervene.
The second half began with Dimarco coming on for Gosens: number 32 was lively, played more inside the box and had two great scoring chances. The most important came in the 60th minute, when he volleyed Darmian's cross into the side netting from an excellent position. Symbolic of the Nerazzurri's bad night. Inzaghi's changes: he brought on Dzeko, Dumfries, Brozovic, and in the final minutes he also gave Carboni a run. Mkhitaryan and Calhanoglu, relentlessly, pressed forward. The Turk, in particular, came close to scoring twice: on one occasion Audero made a very smart save, on the other he was lucky to see the ball whizz past the post. On the other side, as always, Samp made little threat, although Gabbiadini gave Onana a fright with a dangerous glancing header. Inter, albeit decreasingly sharp, never eased the pressure: Acerbi forced Audero into a miracle save in the 92nd minute. Then, at the whistle, Lautaro failed to find the shot in the six yard box, with the referee putting an end to the match on the scuppered opportunity.
