— Jul 15th 2024El Toro's goal sees La Albiceleste emerge victorious: Lautaro becomes the second Inter player to win the Copa America twice
In the 112th minute, Lautaro found himself one on one with Vargas following Lo Celso's through ball and, as has so often happened in 2023/24, it finished with the net bulging, a big roar and El Toro's arms crossed in celebration. Lautaro Martinez's 35th goal of the season sealed La Albiceleste's 16th Copa America triumph.
El Toro's finish only builds on the history linking Inter to the Copa America: nine Nerazzurri have now won the competition. The latest player to have joined this list is Valentin Carboni, who has followed in Lautaro's footsteps (the Nerazzurri captain also won the trophy in 2021). Although Carboni didn't take to the pitch in the final, he was an integral part of the group that emerged victorious over Colombia.
Here is the list of Nerazzurri players who have won the Copa America: - Rubén Sosa (Uruguay, 1995) - Ronaldo (Brazil, 1999) - Ivan Cordoba (Colombia, 2001) - Adriano (Brazil, 2004) - Maicon (Brazil, 2007) - Gary Medel (Chile, 2015 and 2016) - Miranda (Brazil, 2019) - Lautaro Martinez (Argentina, 2021 and 2024) - Valentin Carboni (Argentina, 2024)
After a historic campaign in Italy that saw him bag the winning goal in the Supercoppa Italiana final and finish as the top scorer in Serie A - thus making a huge contribution to the clinching of the Second Star - Lautaro has now added another medal to his collection after some fantastic performances in the Copa America.
The Inter captain has become the third Inter player to win the tournament's Golden Boot award, following in the footsteps of Ronaldo in 1999 (five goals, level with Rivaldo) and Adriano in 2004 (seven). However, Lautaro's five finishes arrived in just 221 minutes, meaning he scored an average of one goal every 44 minutes.
Lautaro is the third Nerazzurri man to score in a Copa America final: previously, Ronaldo found the net in Brazil's 3-0 victory over Uruguay in 1999 and Ivan Cordoba bagged the winner as Colombia beat Mexico in 2001. After his second triumph in the competition, El Toro has drawn level with Gary Medel, who, until a few hours ago, had been the only Inter player to win it twice. The extraordinary journey continues for Lautaro Martinez, who has crowned a record-breaking year, while Valentin Carboni has won the competition in his first participation. Following the 2024 edition, the history between Inter and the Copa America has only become richer.
