A tough result to take. It finished Juve 2-0 Inter at the Allianz Arena, with the Nerazzurri failing to convert their chances and the hosts ruthlessly punishing Inzaghi’s side. In a strange game in Turin, Juventus scored with their first shot on target and went on to hand Inter their fifth league defeat of the season. Lautaro, Dzeko and Dumfries all had chances in the first half before Calhanoglu hit the bar shortly after the restart. Then came an unexpected blow as the Bianconeri opened the scoring, and this was followed by a big chance for Lautaro to level matters. Finally, the hosts launched a successful late counter-attack to kill off the game and move ahead of Inter in the table.
The aim was to get off to a good start, as is always the case in a showdown as historic as this one. Knowing how important a win would be in terms of the league standings, Inter began brightly, displaying real focus and playing in a compact fashion. As for Juve, they were predominantly concerned with closing off the spaces and struggled to mount any meaningful attacks. The Nerazzurri looked lively, were moving the ball well and came close to scoring with a first-time effort from Lautaro after five minutes. Not long afterwards, Calhanoglu let fly with an effort from distance which Szczesny needed two attempts to save.
With Milik barely involved in the game, Juve were hoping that Kostic and Cuadrado could provide some inspiration down the flanks. However, the next chance once again fell to the Nerazzurri: Lautaro flicked on a Dimarco corner and, with Szczesny beaten, Dzeko headed wide from close range (26’). The match wasn’t being played at a frantic pace and the tempo only decreased after the half-hour mark. Allegri, who had Chiesa and Di Maria on the bench, was waiting for half-time to come so he could reinvigorate his side. Inter, meanwhile, were the team putting moves together and almost took the lead in the 42nd minute: Barella latched onto Mkhitaryan’s cross-field pass and played a ball across to Dumfries, who, sliding in, turned it over the bar. The home side were really struggling and, with Inter piling on the pressure, were glad to hear the half-time whistle.
Inzaghi’s men also looked dangerous straight after the restart as Allegri sent out Chiesa to warm up. In the 47th minute, Calhanoglu unleashed a brilliant strike that Szczesny tipped onto the bar. Inter hadn’t managed to score and, as is so often the case in football, they were punished: Kostic escaped down the left flank and picked out Rabiot, who found the far corner with his right foot (52’). It was a goal that brought the stadium to life and, with the wind in their sails, Juve thought they’d made it 2-0 through Danilo after 63 minutes. However, after a long VAR review, it was ruled out due to a handball by the Brazilian.
Inzaghi sent on Gosens and Correa, and the latter immediately got involved as he sent Lautaro through on goal. El Toro, on his 200th appearance, was unable to beat Szczesny, who saved with his legs (75’). However, it wasn’t the start of a Nerazzurri siege on the Juventus goal, with the hosts then putting the game to bed after Dzeko’s attempt to play in Brozovic (making his 300th appearance). Indeed, Kostic provided another assist on the counter, this time for Fagioli (84’). A bitter evening for Inter, then, who now need to quickly move on and finish 2022 as best they can against Bologna and Atalanta.
