So many ingredients were needed on an emotional Champions League night at the Fußball Arena in Munich, where the Nerazzurri emerged victorious thanks to a performance full of character, desire and heart. There was Lautaro's stunning finish, there was Frattesi's pride, and there was a united team that continues to push forward. Here is what was said after tonight's big victory over Bayern Munich on German soil:
“This victory means a lot. We came into this game on the back of a big disappointment in Parma, and we were eager to make amends. We knew who we were coming up against. I’m proud of everyone, and now we need to recover, focus on the league and then turn our attentions to the return leg. This win is a great sign. We have a lot of self-confidence, and we know that if we play like this, we can achieve great things and cause problems for everyone. Bayern are a great team: it’d been four years since they’d last lost at home, and that makes us even prouder. We know their strengths, and we’ll have to dig in during the return leg too, but we can’t wait to take to the pitch. Do we want to go all the way? Yes, otherwise we wouldn’t have even made it this far.”
Alessandro Bastoni
“I’m working hard, and my numbers have improved this season. I’m learning a lot from Dimarco and Bastoni. I’m happy for Frattesi because it’s been difficult for him in recent weeks and he deserved his goal. We had to dig in a lot in the second half and drop back, but we know how to dig in and played a great game. However, there’s still the return leg. I believe we don’t get talked about enough, but we showed all our strength tonight. Playing every three days is tough, but it’s always fantastic to fight on all three fronts and have such an intense April. We always need to try and win, and it’s amazing to play matches of this importance.”
Carlos Augusto
“A very important victory tonight. In the second half, we experienced some difficult spells, but that’s how it is against teams like Bayern. However, there was real energy between us, and we were very compact. We know that Bayern are very aggressive with their pressing, but we were prepared for that. We needed this energy and the courage to play with the ball. We had four or five chances and were efficient, scoring two goals. There was good understanding at the back, and we played well as a team. For me, it was special to play here, and we’re happy with the win. Our fans will be crucial in the return leg: the atmosphere will be perfect at San Siro, which is what we’ll need. The same energy and compactness will also be required. From tomorrow, we’ll prepare for the match against Cagliari: we play every three days, and it’s another important game”
Yann Sommer
“It’s fantastic: we know that Bayern is very strong, but we tried to play with the ball. The first half was very positive and we created many chances, but we then slowed down a bit after the restart. Nevertheless, we’re very happy. It was a great finish to the match. It’s not easy to win here, and congratulations to the team for reacting well after Parma. There’s still the return leg, but, for now, we have the advantage. There will be a great atmosphere at San Siro: we can’t wait to play and want to progress in the competition. Playing all the time is enjoyable for us. It takes sacrifice and isn’t easy – especially mentally – but this way we’re always together, making it even more beautiful.”
