MILAN - Giuseppe Marotta was a guest on the radio show Radio anch'io sport, live on RAI Radio 1. These were the words of the Nerazzurri President
"An uphill climb for the World Cup? I would say so, but these are all good experiences. This Italy side is very young and inexperienced, but they have a lot of quality. Spalletti's work will be tested more in June when we will have some more important tests for this youthful team that are growing every game.
The great thing about football is that at the moment there are three teams in contention for the title. It's a tight season like we haven't seen for many years and this is definitely a good thing for the league. We are still so close so every point counts. We have often seen that games against lower-ranked opposition are under-valued and that games against the league's best get all the focus. Whereas actually, "easier" games have often caused more problems, so I think it's still a really open season.
The U23 side is a way to get young players ready for the first team. The gap between the first team and the U19s it too wide, so we need something in between. We will always ask the federation if this team can compete in the Pro leagues next year and we are doing it for these reasons.
Let's remember when the league had 16 teams, now we have 20. We need to have 18. The national teams have also had some key matches and this balance between club and country is the main problem. The game's tactics, technique and aggression has changed a lot compared to the past. Physical strain is not like what is was in the 80s and 90s. It all gets very fatiguing and it creates many factors that often result in injuries.
Inter get little praise? Inzaghi had a very professional reaction, I can also understand a more instinctive and less rational outburst. He knows it, we are Inter and we are under a lot of pressure like all the big clubs. Inter has set great standards in history, achieving amazing feats that we are aiming to follow, and so it is normal that there is this sort of tension and pressure. It's part of the game, but we must be ambitious from a sporting point of view. We need to be up for it, as we are right now, for the various competitions that we are playing in.
We are very happy with Inzaghi, his contract renewal is a formality. He has worked really well over these years and he is a role model for the whole club from a technical point of view. He is one of the best managers around, and he also has the advantage of being a once great footballer. We are very happy to have him with us and I think that, when all is said and done, we will get together with the club and renew his contract.
The Attack? I must say that, seeing our statistics, we have the most prolific attack in the league, so we have no issues there. Maybe we didn't manage to score in one match. In all of the others, we found the back of the net. I would say there isn't an issue, Inzaghi's set-up works well, as a team ready to pounce forward. Isaksen? He's a good player, but every day people say we are interested in some player or another. We already have a great partnership up front, Lautaro and Thuram, I think they're the best in Italy and they are up there with the best in Europe. It's clear that we are making a plan, we'll sort it in depth with Ausilio and Baccin and we will bear in mind what the market has to offer, in order to create the best squad as possible that will help us achieve our goals that we have laid out for ourselves"
