In Asia, the third round of World Cup qualifying has begun, with Mehdi Taremi's Iran involved. The Inter attacker wore the captain's armband as his country faced Kyrgyzstan at home on Thursday afternoon. The match finished 1-0 thanks to a goal from Taremi, who handed the Iranians victory on matchday one in Group A. Mehdi played the full 90 minutes.
Iran's next match on the road to the 2026 World Cup will be away to the United Arab Emirates in Al Ain on Tuesday 10 September.
