Team
— Feb 4th 2024Numbers, facts and statistics ahead of Sunday's big game against the Bianconeri
The top-of-the-table showdown between Inter and Juventus is fast approaching: on Sunday the Nerazzurri will take on the Bianconeri on matchday 23 in Serie A at 20:45 CET at San Siro. They face each other with both having at least 50 points before matchday 25 for the first time in Serie A: the home side come into the game itop of the table with the best attack and best defence, with Juventus second. The two teams meet again after the reverse fixture ended 1-1 earlier in the season.
CLASH OF THE TITANS
Inter have achieved at least 17 wins and collected at least 54 points in the first 21 games of the season for the second time in their history in Serie A; the only previous time was in 2006/07 (18 wins and 57 points under Roberto Mancini). Juventus have earned 53 points after 22 Serie A matches this season (16W, 5D, 1L). A successful January for both teams: in the first month of 2024, Inter won each of their five matches played in all competitions, keeping a clean sheet in the last three and winning their eighth Supercoppa Italiana in the Club's history (the Nerazzurri have played one league game less). On the other hand, Juventus won two Coppa Italia matches and won ten points in four league matches (W3; D1).
DEFENCES ON TOP
Sunday's match will also compare the two best defences in the league. The Nerazzurri have conceded just ten goals so far and only once in their Serie A history have they conceded fewer goals after 21 games: in 1988/89 with Giovanni Trapattoni as coach. The Bianconeri follow with 13 goals conceded. Inter (13) and Juventus (twelve) have collected the highest number of clean sheets and, overall, have conceded fewer shots on target (60 for the Nerazzurri, 61 for the Bianconeri).
GOALS: WHEN AND HOW
A top-of-the-table-clash when it comes to goals, too: in the list of Serie A scorers, Lautaro Martinez is in first place with 19 goals scored, followed by Juventus player Vlahovic with twelve. Overall, Inter with 50 goals scored, is the Club with the best attack in the competition (36 goals for Juventus). Inter - having scored in each of their 21 matches played in this year's Serie A - could become only the second team to score at least one goal in the first 22 matches played in a single top-flight season after Juventus (who managed it the last time in 2018/19). Inter (twleve) and Juventus (eleven) have also scored the most goals from crosses this season and have scored the most goals in the first quarter of an hour of play (along with Fiorentina).
LAUTARO: GOAL AND RECORDS
Lautaro Martìnez, who scored in the reverse fixture, has scored 19 goals in 19 appearances in this league campaign: the Nerazzurri captain could become the third player to score at least 20 goals for three seasons in a row in Serie A in the history of Inter, after Giuseppe Meazza (five - from 1929/30 to 1933/34) and Stefano Nyers (four - from 1948/49 to 1951/52). El Toro could also become the second Inter player in the last 60 years to score at least 20 goals in 22 matches for the Nerazzurri in a Serie A season, after Christian Vieri did it in 2002/03 (21 for him). January was a record for the Argentine striker who, with his goal against Fiorentina, joined Mauro Icardi (both 124) in eighth position in the Club's all-time goalscoring charts in all competitions. He has scored 98 goals in Serie A: Lautaro could become only the third foreign player in Inter's history to reach the milestone of 100 goals in the top division, after Stefano Nyers (133) and Mauro Icardi (111).
