MILAN – The Champions League is back and a huge showdown awaits Inter straight away. On matchday one in Group C, the Nerazzurri will face Bayern Munich for the first time since the teams met at the round of 16 stage of the tournament in 2010/11. It's a historic European clash: the sides have come up against each other seven times in total, most notably in 2010 when Inter emerged victorious in the final. So far, there have been three wins apiece and a draw, with both teams having scored nine goals in these meetings.
THAT GOAL FROM PANDEV As previously mentioned, the two teams last met during the 2010/11 edition of the Champions League, on 15 March 2011 to be precise. It was a day that saw Inter make an incredible comeback, with Pandev netting an 88th-minute winner. The Germans had won the first leg 1-0 at San Siro, and Inter needed to come up with something special at the Allianz Arena. And that is exactly what they did in a pulsating showdown. In the second leg of that round of 16 tie, everything happened. First, Eto’o gave the Nerazzurri the lead after four minutes. However, Gomez and then Muller turned things around for the home side, who led after half an hour. In the second half, Sneijder got Inter back into it with a strike from distance before Pandev's precise left-footed finish sent Inter into the quarter-finals.
VIEIRA IN THE 91ST MINUTE Another trip to Bavaria and another goal in the closing stages. It was the 2006/07 campaign and the final matchday in Group B. The Germans had taken the lead through Makaay, but Vieira managed to strike in stoppage time. Inter qualified for the round of 16 in second place.
MAGICAL NIGHT IN MADRID That night in Madrid in 2010. No more needs to be said: the final against Bayern was legendary. Inter fans just need to close their eyes and they know how 'Il Principe' scored his two goals. The second one in particular was trademark Milito. He ran at his opponent, dribbled past him with a drop of the shoulder and placed the ball beautifully into the far corner.
THAT RUN FROM NICOLA BERTI One of the best goals in Nerazzurri history. A moment that has become iconic. A run full of adrenaline and instinct. We're obviously talking about Nicola Berti's goal on 23 November 1988, when the Nerazzurri beat the Germans 2-0 away from home. Aldo Serena had broken the deadlock on the hour mark in a match that became truly memorable thanks to the Italian's wonderful piece of play. It didn't, however, lead to Inter qualifying for the next round, with Bayern winning the second leg 3-1 at San Siro.
