Sometimes, that is just the way those Inter nights go. Those nights that have you on the edge of your seat. They’re long, tense and unending because this Club never gives up. The Coppa Italia round of 16 always seems to produce long, often agonising tales full of twists and turns. It was thus against Empoli last year – with Ranocchia’s overhead kick to send it to extra time – and it was against Parma this season. Tonight, Lautaro it was who brought the Nerazzurri level in the 88th minute. Acerbi then scored the winner in extra time, his first goal for the Club, heading powerfully past Gigi Buffon, who himself had a great game. It was a long one but the Nerazzurri prevailed and are into the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia.
Ahead of the game, the Nerazzurri sought to harness the disappointment of recent results. With that 2-2 draw against Monza fresh in the mind, Inter went about starting, their title defence from last season, which itself started with a win after extra time. It certainly wasn’t the most exciting game; the tempo was low, and Inter had plenty of possession, but chances were few and far between. Onana was forced into a save to deny Vazquez, while Buffon, who is now almost 45 years of age, looked brilliant from start to finish. Inter struggled to get anything going on the front foot but did come close through Gagliardini. That was, however, Inter’s only chance of a first half that ended with Parma in the lead thanks to an absolute stunner from substitute Stanko Juric.
1-0 down at the break, work to be done in the second half in front of the vocal 40,000-strong crowd at San Siro. There were promising signs early on but Pecchia’s side held firm, maintaining their shape. Inzaghi wrought the changes and Inter’s fortunes changed with it: Dzeko on, and it became a front three with Lautaro and Correa. Bellanova ate up the yards down the right and Dimarco looked dangerous. Yet, until the 87th minute, Inter hadn’t had a shot on target. Then it came. In the 88th minute, the ball dropped kindly for Lautaro, who smashed it home to make it 1-1. The goal gave Inter a new lease on life. Moments later, Dzeko came agonisingly close to a winner but Buffon produced a miraculous save to deny the Bosnian.
So, it went to extra time. Progression or a potential early exit was just 30 minutes away. And it seemed like the latter was on the cards as Parma started extra time well but then, Inter struck. In the second half of extra time, Asllani found Dimarco, who took the ball well and sent the cross into the box. Buffon punched clear but only as far as Acerbi whose powerful header rippled the back of the net. He was over ten metres away from goal, it really was a stunning effort. It ended 2-1 after much toil and Inter are through to the quarters after a not-so-easy evening at San Siro.
