Black and white images, very distant memories: 70 years ago, on 30 May 1954, Inter won their seventh Scudetto title. It was a team made up of players who would go down in legend, epic heroes whose exploits we know thanks to tales handed down from one generation to the next by Interisti who fell in love. Lennart Skoglund, Istvan Nyers, Benito "Veleno" Lorenzi: a trio who wrote a magnificent page in Nerazzurri history and among the first champions to become popular icons of a winning team.
Coached by Alfredo Foni, Inter's 1953/54 side kicked off the campaign having won the league the previous season. Changes were made, but the key figures remained the same. In addition to the magnificent attacking trio, Inter could also count on Sergio Brighenti and Gino Armano, the latter of whom finished as the Nerazzurri's top scorer in Serie A with 13 goals.
On 1 November 1953, Inter beat AC Milan 3-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Nyers, but the Nerazzurri found themselves level on points with Fiorentina and Juventus at the halfway stage. In the second half of the campaign, it became a two-way fight with the Bianconeri for the Scudetto. The two teams met on 4 April, with Inter running out 6-0 winners - the Nerazzurri's biggest ever win in the Derby d'Italia. Inter went on to clinch the title after beating Triestina 4-2 on the final matchday, with Lorenzi, Nyers and Skoglund all getting on the scoresheet. It was a historic triumph: never before had Inter won the league twice in a row, and Alfredo Foni became the first Nerazzurri coach to lead the Club to two Scudetto titles.
70 years have passed since that wonderful day, but, from the seventh to 20th Scudetto, the passion and love felt by the fans remain the same, just like the extraordinary emotions the Nerazzurri are capable of generating.
