Inter rounded off the season with a 3-0 win over Sampdoria at San Siro. It was the team’s 52nd match of a campaign (38 in Serie A, eight in the Champions League, five in the Coppa Italia and one in the Italian Super Cup) in which the Nerazzurri won the Italian Super Cup and the Coppa Italia, while a second-placed finish was secured in the league and Simone Inzaghi’s side reached the last 16 of the Champions League.
In Serie A, Inter racked up 84 points thanks to 25 wins, nine draws and four defeats. In total, Inzaghi’s charges had the most potent attack in the league, registering 84 goals, while they conceded 32. The Nerazzurri found the net in 35 of the 38 league fixtures, which was more than any other side. There were 15 clean sheets along the way as well.
CORREA'S THIRD BRACE
Joaquin Correa played a key role against Sampdoria with a second-half brace. The Argentine managed six goals over the course of the campaign, all of which were doubles, with the previous two coming against Hellas Verona and Udinese. His two goals at San Siro came just one minute and 59 seconds apart. Correa has scored more than once in the last five Serie A games in which he has got on the scoresheet.
BARELLA AND CALHANOGLU ASSISTS
The Inter midfielders both made key contributions in the final home game of the campaign. Both Nicolo Barella and Hakan Calhanoglu provided assists at the Meazza, with the Italian setting up Ivan Perisic for the opener and the Turk teeing up the Argentine in the penalty box. They finished the season with 12 assists, which is the highest number for an Inter player since Opta started collecting such data in 2004/05.
While Calhanoglu often provided assists from set-pieces, all 12 of Barella’s set-ups came from open play. Among players in the top five European leagues, only Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku is on a par with the Italian in this category.
PERISIC SCORES AGAIN
Perisic grabbed the opener against Sampdoria to cap off a wonderful season. The Croat scored ten goals in his 49 appearances, eight of which were in the league, helping the winger become the foreign player with the most Serie A goals (49) to his name with Inter.
