MILAN – Inter were applauded off the pitch at San Siro after falling to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool in the first leg of the last-16 tie in the Champions League. The Nerazzurri outperformed the Reds for over 70 minutes, but were punished in the final quarter of an hour through goals by Roberto Firmino from a corner and Mo Salah.
“It’s difficult to comment on that sort of result, but I’m pleased and proud of our team performance,” Inzaghi told Prime Video after the game.
“We turned in a good performance. Unfortunately, we weren’t rewarded with the goals that we deserved and when we were on top, we fell behind to a goal from a set-piece. It was still a wonderful evening. The San Siro faithful got behind us from start to finish. The result is a shame, but this attitude will stand us in good stead for the future.
“Liverpool are one of the best sides in Europe. My Inter team went toe-to-toe with them and deserved more. This performance has to give us confidence because I think it was possibly our best display this season considering the quality of our opposition.
“It’s difficult to comment on a result like that, but we know that’s how it can go in football. We have to take confidence from the performance and it can be a starting point for us.”
