MILAN – Inter are set to compete in the Super Cup for the tenth time in the club’s history on Wednesday when the reigning Italian champions take on Coppa Italia holders Juventus in the 34th edition of the competition.
PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS
Inter and Juventus will do battle for the 216th time in all competitions since the first meeting in 1929/30 and for just the second time in the Italian Super Cup. The previous contest went the way of the Nerazzurri in 2005 when Juan Sebastian Veron notched the winner in extra time.
The last nine clashes between the two clubs at San Siro in all competitions have yielded a balanced outcome, with three wins apiece and three draws.
It will be the fourth final between the Nerazzurri and the Bianconeri in all competitions going back to 1929/30. Juve came out on top in the Coppa Italia in 1959 and 1965, while Inter tasted Super Cup success in 2005.
Over the last 30 years, the two teams have faced off seven times in the month of January. The Nerazzurri have four wins to their name and have only lost once, which was the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final in 2016.
STATS
Simone Inzaghi’s side will be competing in the Super Cup for the first time since 2011 and it will be the twelfth time that the showpiece fixture has been staged at the Meazza. The competition is returning to Milan for the first time since 2010 when the Nerazzurri ran out 3-1 winners over Roma.
The last four editions of the Super Cup that have been held at the Meazza all saw Inter take on Roma, with the Nerazzurri coming out on top in three of them.
Ahead of their 17th involvement in the Super Cup, Juve will be looking to build on their record as the most decorated club in the competition’s history.
Only one of the last 51 goals scored in the Super Cup came in the first 15 minutes of action.
FORM BOOK
Inter have lost only one of their last 16 matches in all competitions (2-0 at Real Madrid in early December), picking up 13 wins in that spell, including the last four, and just two stalemates.
Juventus are unbeaten in eight games in all competitions (W6, D2), with their last defeat coming at the hands of Atalanta in Serie A in last November.
The two clubs that have scored the most goals in the history of the Super Cup (excluding penalties) are Juventus (28) and Inter (17).
Inter have scored 14 headed goals in all competitions in 2021/22, which is more than any other side in the top five European leagues.

COACHES

The Inter coach won the competition twice during his Lazio days. Only Fabio Capello (four), Marcello Lippi (four) and Massimiliano Allegri (three) have lifted the trophy more times as a coach. Both of Inzaghi’s Super Cup successes came against Juventus, with the winning team netting three goals on both occasions (in 2017 and 2019), with Allegri in the opposite dugout for the first of those.
