The boss reflects on a dominant display against Salernitana: “We got our approach spot on and put our game plan into practice"

SALERNO – It was another perfect night for Inter. After putting four past Cagliari at home, they went one better to defeat Salernitana 5-0 on Friday – taking their goal tally for the calendar year past the 100 mark to beat the club record of 99 set in 1950. What's more, they did it with five different goalscorers: Ivan Perisic and Denzel Dumfries in the first half, then Alexis Sanchez, Lautaro Martinez and Roberto Gagliardini after the break.

Speaking after the final whistle, Simone Inzaghi could only praise his side for enacting the game plan.

“Our attitude was spot on because in this sort of match you have everything to lose,” he said. “We knew we needed the right approach to make sure Salernitana couldn't get a foothold on the game and that's what we did. They hold a high defensive line, we knew that and we timed our runs well to exploit it. We put our game plan into practice.”

Quizzed about Piero Ausilio's comments in which he described the coach as an 'interior designer', Inzaghi replied: “As I've said lots of times, I've joined a fantastic club who have given me nothing but support since day one, believing in me and my staff. It's nice to be appreciated and I'm pleased everything is going well.

“I'm fortunate to coach such fantastic players and they're giving me their all. I had a good feeling from the start – what we're seeing now we already had in August. We dropped a few points and with what the Champions League was taking out of us and two teams basically winning every game, it made the league table look difficult. We never got down about it though.

“Now we're top but we know we're still at the start of our journey. Napoli, Atalanta and AC Milan are three excellent, well-drilled sides with lots of talent and great coaches, so it's going to be an open title race down to the wire.”

The coach signed off with a message for Christian Eriksen: “I send him my very best wishes. I'm sorry I never got to coach him but the main thing is he's well. I hope he can start over and I wish him all the best.”
