MILAN – The Nerazzurri's season ends on Sunday 23 May, already Italian champions since matchday 35 of Serie A 2020/21. Inter will face Luca Gotti’s Udinese at the Meazza, who sit on 40 points in the standings after 37 games (10 W, 10 D, 17 L), having scored 41 goals and conceded 53. Conte's team meanwhile, go into the game on 88 points, after 27 wins, seven draws and three defeats.
HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD
Sunday's match will be the 96th meeting between the two teams. The head-to-head record favours Inter with 47 wins compared to Udinese's 21, and to complete the picture, there have been 27 draws. A trend that has been confirmed in recent matches between the two teams, as there have been nine Nerazzurri wins in the last twelve Serie A meetings (2L, 1D). Inter have kept a clean sheet in each of their last six Serie A matches against Udinese; only against Reggina (11) between 2003 and 2008, have the Nerazzurri gone on a longer streak without conceding against any one opponent in the competition. Inter could also record three clean sheets in a row at home against the Friulians for the first time in Serie A history.
CURRENT FORM
With 88 points, the champions of Italy Inter come into the last league match following 27 wins, seven draws and three defeats in 37 matches, having scored 84 goals and conceded 34, the best defence of the season. Inter will be the first team in Serie A history to cross the milestone of 3,000 games in the competition: the Nerazzurri have so far obtained 1,495 wins, 834 draws and 670 defeats.
Udinese are twelfth in the table with 40 points. In their last five games they have earned one win (against Benevento) which was followed by a draw and three defeats. The Friulians lost 0-1 in their last league match against Sampdoria, and have not gone two matches in a row without scoring in the competition since October 2020 (three matches in that case). The match with Inter in the first round ended 0-0, and among the top-ranked teams they have also picked up draws against Atalanta and AC Milan.
GENERAL STATISTICS
With one more appearance, Samir Handanovic can overtake Walter Zenga (328) and become the sole record holder for the Inter goalkeeper with the most appearances in Serie A. Since his debut in the Italian top flight, with Udinese in 2004/05, Handanovic has kept a clean sheet in 180 matches in the competition; more than any other goalkeeper (including 14 clean sheets in the current campaign, another record).
Amongst active players with fewer than 100 appearances in the top five European leagues, only Wout Weghorst (70) of Wolfsburg been involved in more goals than Lautaro Martinez: 46 (36 goals and 10 assists in 99 appearances), the same as Lucas Alario and Erling Haaland.
THE COACHES
This will be the third Serie A match between Antonio Conte and Luca Gotti after the Nerazzurri won in the second round last season and the draw in the first round of this season. The Nerazzurri coach has eight wins from ten matches against the Friulians, with two draws completing the picture.
