Everything you need to know ahead of Wednesday's 20:45 CET kick-off at San Siro

MILAN – At 20:45 CET on Wednesday, Inter will play their twelfth Serie A fixture of the season when they take on Napoli at San Siro. Conte’s men are heading into the game on the back of four consecutive league wins, while Gattuso’s side have won their last three. Ahead of Wednesday’s showdown, here are all the facts and figures that you need to know.

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS BETWEEN INTER AND NAPOLI

Inter and Napoli have faced each other 148 times in the league, with the Nerazzurri’s record against the Partenopei reading as follows: 66 wins, 36 draws, 46 defeats. Inter have won three of their last four fixtures against Napoli in the Italian top flight (L1), more than in their 15 encounters with the same side prior to this (D6, L7). Last season, Conte’s men won both league fixtures against Napoli, scoring five and conceding one. The Nerazzurri have found the net in each of their past four Serie A matches against Napoli after previously going four games without doing so. This is the longest goalscoring run Inter have been on against the team from Naples since 2000, when they netted for the eighth match in a row against them in Serie A. The two teams will be meeting at San Siro for the 75th time, with Inter having won 48, drawn 17 and lost nine against Napoli in Milan so far.

FUN FACT: 55 GOALS SCORED BETWEEN INTER AND NAPOLI

Inter and Napoli are the teams that have found the net on the most occasions during the 2020/21 season. Having scored 29 goals, Conte’s men currently have the best attack in the league. Following them are Napoli, who have netted 26 goals through ten different players this campaign. This is their third best haul of all time in Serie A after eleven matchdays following the 2017/18 (32) and 1957/58 (30) seasons.

STATE OF PLAY AND STATS

Inter and Napoli will both be aiming to build on their recent results in the Italian top flight. The Nerazzurri got the better of Torino, Sassuolo, Bologna and Cagliari in their last four matches, scoring 13 and conceding four in the process. The Nerazzurri have found the net nine times in the final 15 minutes of games during the 2020/21 campaign, more than any other side. Conte’s men have the opportunity to win their fifth consecutive league fixture during a single season for the first time since December 2019. Gattuso’s team, meanwhile, have bounced back from their defeat to Milan to pick up three successive wins against Roma, Crotone and Sampdoria, scoring ten and conceding just once over the course of those games.

PLAYER FOCUS

Starting from 2012/13, Danilo D’Ambrosio is one of just four defenders to have bagged at least 20 goals in Serie A. The others are Alessandro Florenzi (25), Gonzalo Rodríguez (22) and Leonardo Bonucci (21).

Two of the five goals Lautaro Martínez has scored after coming on as a substitute came against Napoli. The Argentine striker has been the last scorer in three of the four matches he’s played against the Partenopei in Serie A.

Romelu Lukaku has found the net 13 times in 15 matches this season. Out of the players who have played more than three away matches in the three-points-per-win era, Romelu Lukaku has the best average of goals per game on the road: 19 in 24 away fixtures (0.79).

Napoli are one of four sides that Stefan de Vrij has scored two goals against in Italy’s top division.

Only Harry Kane (ten) has provided more assists than Napoli forward Dries Mertens (six) in the Top 5 European leagues this season.

COACHES

Antonio Conte has won five of his nine matches against Napoli as a coach in Serie A. Two draws and the same number of defeats complete the picture.

Antonio Conte and Gennaro Gattuso have faced each other on two occasions while in the managerial dugout in the Italian top flight: the Nerazzurri Coach got the better of his counterpart both times last year.
