Inter vs. Milan: stats and trivia

MILAN – At 18:00 CEST on Saturday 17 October, the 173rd league Derby will take place at San Siro. Here’s everything that you need to know ahead of the matchday four showdown.

PREVIOUS ENCOUNTERS 

The match on Saturday will be the 173rd time Inter and Milan have met in Serie A, with the Nerazzurri’s record against their cross-city rivals reading as follows: 66 wins, 55 draws, 51 defeats. The Derby della Madonnina has produced 463 goals: when it comes to the Nerazzurri, only matches against Roma and Fiorentina have resulted in more. Inter are the team that Milan have conceded the most goals against in Serie A (242).

Inter have a very good recent record against Milan, winning all of the last four meetings between the sides: the Nerazzurri’s longest winning streak against their cross-city rivals came between 1979 and 1983 (five). Inter have also won the last four October encounters between the teams, scoring an average of 2.3 goals per game.  

Inter are unbeaten in nine home matches against Milan in Serie A (W6, D3): the longest that the Nerazzurri have gone without tasting defeat against the Rossoneri on home turf is ten fixtures, which were the very first ten games between the sides in Serie A (in the 1930s). The upcoming match will be the 87th time the teams have faced each other in the league with Inter as the home team: the Nerazzurri have won 33 times compared to Milan’s 23 victories. There have been 30 draws.

Antonio Conte’s team are unbeaten in the league so far and sit on seven points after three matchdays (W2, D1).

Milan have scored in each of their last 23 league games (they haven’t done better than this since 1973) and haven’t conceded in their last four (their best run since 2006).

GENERAL STATISTICS

The Nerazzurri have scored ten goals after three league fixtures, Inter’s best return since the 1966/67. On average, Conte’s men have had 64.1% of the ball, more than any other side. Only Sassuolo (57) have attempted more shots than Inter (51) and Milan (50) so far this season.

Since the start of 2020, only Atalanta (56) have picked up more points than Milan (54) and Inter (47) in Serie A.

Milan are one of four sides that Romelu Lukaku found the net against both home and away last season.

Lautaro Martínez has scored four goals in his last five league matches, as many as he’d managed to net in 16 appearances in the competition prior to this. The Argentine striker has found the net in each of Inter’s three opening league games of the 2020/21 Serie A season, the first time he’s scored for three consecutive matches in the Italian top flight.

Arturo Vidal has scored one goal against Milan in Serie A: this came from the penalty spot in April 2013.

Milan are one of four sides that Stefan de Vrij has scored more than one goal against in Serie A: the Nerazzurri defender made his debut in the Italian top flight against the Rossoneri in August 2014, back when he was on Lazio’s books.

Ivan Perisic also made his Serie A debut against Milan back in September 2015. The Croatian winger has scored once and provided three assists against the Rossoneri in Italy’s top tier: this contribution came between 2016 and 2017.

Antonio Conte could become the first Inter Coach in history to win his first three Derby matches in the Nerazzurri dugout in all competitions. The Nerazzurri Coach is unbeaten in five Serie A matches against Stefano Pioli, winning four and drawing once. Furthermore, Conte has lost just once against Milan in the Italian top flight (a 1-0 defeat in November 2012) and has got the better of the Rossoneri on six occasions, also drawing twice.
