Friday night’s 21:00 CEST kick-off in Cologne will be the first meeting between Inter and the Spanish side

The Europa League final is right around the corner. This will be our fifth in this competition in our history, and the sixth for the Spaniards. Sevilla are certainly a well-versed side in the UEFA Cup/Europa League, having won the competition five times in the last 15 years. Let’s look at ten of the biggest things to know about Lopetegui’s side with a video at the bottom of this article.

1. Sevilla are the oldest sports club in Spain. Founded in January 1890, the club was officially registered in 1905.

2. The derby between Sevilla and Real Betis is one of the hottest rivalries in all of Spain. The two teams, separated by the Guadalquivir river, have met on 184 occasions, Sevilla winning 88 and Betis winning 53 of these encounters.

3. Sevilla have won five UEFA Cup/Europa League trophies in the last 15 years. A round and flawless record, with five finals and five wins. They lead the rankings for most trophies in this competition with five.

5. The Nerazzurri’s record against Spanish sides is 15 wins, 13 draws and 21 defeats.

6. Several players have donned the shirts of both Inter and Sevilla, with Ever Banega one of these currently still in Sevilla’s squad. The Argentinian played for the Spanish side from 2014 to 2016, spending the 2016/17 season in an Inter shirt before returning to Sevilla. Other old flames of both sides are: Ivan Zamorano, Diego Simeone, Stevan Jovetic, Marco Andreolli and Geoffrey Kondogbia.

7. The Spanish side have hosted a handful of Italian players in recent years, with former Palermo man Franco Vazquez currently in their squad. Other Azzurri to have worn the Sevilla shirt over the years have been: Ciro Immobile, Tiberio Guarente, Enzo Maresca, Salvatore Sirigu, Morgan De Sanctis and Luca Cigarini. Vincenzo Montella also coached Sevilla in 2018.

8. Plenty of stars have stepped foot on the hallowed grass of the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán playing for the club over the years, including Diego Armando Maradona, Dani Alves, Sergio Ramos, Ivan Rakitic, Frederic Kanouté (the club’s top scorer in European competitions with 28 goals) and the indispensable Jesus Navas, current Sevilla club captain.

9. Sevilla finished in fourth place in La Liga this season, but would have been disappointed to have been knocked out of the Copa del Rey by a second division side in Mirandés.

10. Julen Lopetegui lost just six out of his 38 games in the Spanish league this season (15.8%), the lowest number of losses out of any coach in the club’s history. Sevilla are unbeaten in 20 games in all competitions, having won eight of their last nine outings.
