MILAN - Perhaps one of the most iconic games in Inter’s history. Certainly one of the most meaningful at San Siro: Inter vs. Napoli on 28 May 1989, the game to win Scudetto number 13, the Scudetto of records.

31 years ago today, Giovanni Trapattoni’s Inter were preparing themselves to face Maradona and Careca’s Napoli on matchday 30 in Serie A. The standings before kick-off read: Inter 50, Napoli 43. A victory would be enough to secure Scudetto number 13 for the Nerazzurri, a defeat would open the door for Napoli to get back into the title race.
San Siro was full of nerves, but Zenga made save after save to protect the Nerazzurri net. It was a rollercoaster of an afternoon, with Napoli taking the lead through Careca in minute 36. A change at half-time: Bianchi on for Baresi. As always, Berti found his way onto the scoresheet, his volley deflecting off Fusi and into the back of the net. But the Nerazzurri had to wait until the 38th minute of the second half for the decisive moment: Matthäus’ thunderous free kick. That immortal right foot securing Scudetto number 13 for Inter, and kicking off the Nerazzurri celebrations that day at San Siro.
