Berti: “We were the backbone of that team: the one who started things, the creative one and the one who finished them off; three fundamental aspects of that record-breaking team. Our team had great togetherness, we were friends and often spent time together off the pitch, that was the secret behind that Inter team: we were close and had fun.”
Brehme: “Each player in that team played an important role, we had a great spirit in the locker room.”
Serena: “After beating Ascoli 3-1 on matchday two we were then losing against Pisa and we were a bit worried at half time, but we played well and I thought to myself, if we continued to play like that we could win the Scudetto. The arrival of Andy and Lothar gave the team great physical presence in the middle of the park, in my opinion Brehme had always been a playmaker who had been pushed out to the left, and whenever he got the ball he’d never lose it: he could play it left or right, short or long and dictate the game. Then we had the younger guys like Bianchi, Nicola and Ramon Diaz, all of us had different attributes. Brehme could put it on a sixpence with both feet from 50 yards, his accuracy was perfect.”
Brehme: “I could use both feet equally to be honest, the important thing was to score and create goals.”
They all had their own, different iconic moments and memories with Inter:
Berti: “The Derby we played three days after being eliminated by Bayern showed the strength of that side to bounce back straight away.”
Serena: “That was one of the greatest goals I scored. That team had a very strong defence, as well as a metronome in midfield, Matteoli, who was at the heart of everything. He even started the move for that goal by playing a one-two with me before playing one in behind for Bergomi; his vision and technical ability were second to none.”
Coach Trapattoni led that group:
Serena: “Trapattoni is one of the coaches that I was very close to, he was a ‘physcologist’ and put the person and the group first, he knew exactly the right time to give you a hiding or when it was right to encourage you.”
Brehme: “The Trap was one of the best coaches I ever had, he’s a great person with extraordinary character.”
One of the secrets of that journey was the players’ connection and intuition:
Serena: “I had an instinctive relationship with Andy and we immediately forged a great understanding on the pitch, at first Nicola almost annoyed me, he was too exuberant but then I realised his unique qualities and we got on well together.”
Brehme: “Aldo was a strong player up top, one of the best I’ve come across, Nicola was very strong and fast but always used to be in the middle when we did a rondo!”
