THE MATCH
On 4 April 2004 Inter faced Juventus in a packed out San Siro. Recoba and Toldo were both out and Adriano was on the bench, so Inter had Fontana between the sticks while Materazzi was returning to the pitch after 131 days out alongside Cordoba and Gamarra in defence, then a midfield of Javier Zanetti, Cristiano Zanetti, Farinos, Kily Gonzalez and Stankovic supported the duo of Vieri and Martins up front.
Just 300 seconds after kick-off, Martins was unveiling his trademark somersault celebration as the Nerazzurri took the lead when Stankovic squared it to the Nigerian, who slotted home. The, after Kily Gonzalez’s unlucky own goal, the Serb won a penalty and Christian Vieri smashed home from the spot to restore the Nerazzurri’s lead. Having created the first two goals, ‘The Dragon’ crowned his great performance and Inter’s victory with a goal of his own following Farinos’ corner. Finally, with time almost up, Marco Di Vaio scored to make it 3-2 before the final whistle blew.
