My Inter Shirts, Moriero’s collection
Legends
— Apr 30th 2020Our former Nerazzurri midfielder told us all about the most important shirts from his time at Inter
“I felt a sense of both pleasure and honour every time I put on the Inter shirt”
The second star of My Inter Shirts is Francesco Moriero. Our former midfielder spent three seasons at Inter between 1997 and 2000, wearing the number 17 for the first two and the number 7 for the last. He didn’t take long to become a key player in an Inter side that won the UEFA Cup against Lazio in Paris, and will be especially remembered for his great play down the flanks, his vision and his iconic goals, just like that extraordinary bicycle kick against the Swiss side Neuchatel Xamax. These shirts represent his connection with the Club:
“There are so many games that have remained in my heart, but the one I remember most fondly is that UEFA Cup final against Lazio in 1998, as well as the one in which I scored a bicycle kick against Neuchatel Xamax, that goal was crazy.”
His trademark “shoeshine” celebration paid homage to plenty of great champions with whom he shared the pitch, champions who scored some unforgettable goals, from Recoba’s debut brace to Ronaldo’s stunners. Moriero’s shirts belong to the history of that side, which he shared with some of the greatest players to have worn Nerazzurri colours:
“I traded plenty of shirts in my career, also with my teammates, that was an extraordinary side. I have a special attachment to those from Ronaldo and Baggio because they were simply world class champions.”
There is however an empty space in every collection, a shirt that just got away or one that has been pursued for so long. In Moriero’s case that would be an Inter shirt worn for 20 years by Bergomi:
“The shirt I’d want? I’d say Bergomi’s is missing from my collection, his is the shirt I’d like to have because he was just a legend.”
