MILAN – Shortly after their win in the league against Bologna, Inter return to the pitch for their UEFA Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund on matchday four of the group stage.
The match on Tuesday 5 November will be Borussia Dortmund’s third home game against Inter in European competitions, with the past results in favour of the Nerazzurri after a 2-2 draw back in April 1964 in the European Cup and a 3-1 win in March 1994 in the UEFA Cup.
Throughout Dortmund’s history in European competitions, Inter are one of only four teams against which the German club has played at least twice at home without ever winning, the others being Juventus (four times), Liverpool and Barcelona (twice each).
The only encounter between the two teams in the modern Champions League era came earlier this season in the game that ended 2-0 to Inter at San Siro thanks to goals from Lautaro Martinez and Candreva. Our Argentine now has the chance to become the first Inter player to score in three consecutive UEFA Champions League appearances since Samuel Eto'o scored four in a row back in 2010. The only other Argentinian to achieve this feat for the Nerazzurri was Hernán Crespo in 2002.
The last game in the group was also one of note for Samir Handanovic as the Nerazzurri captain recorded his first Champions League clean sheet after nine appearances in the competition. The last Inter goalkeeper to keep two clean sheets in a row in the European competition was Julio César back in April 2010 (three in a row).
