"I want to thank the club for the opportunity. We’ll try to end on a high at San Siro," said the Inter coach at the Premio Maestrelli

CASSINO – Inter coach Stefano Vecchi looked back on the win over Lazio and spoke about the club’s objectives going forward as he appeared at the Premio Maestrelli on Monday.

Vecchi was being honoured as part of the awards ceremony, which recognises football personalities that have stood out from the crowd not just because of their achievements, but also on account of the fair play and decency they have shown.

"I’m proud to receive this award," said the Nerazzurri coach. "The other coaches that have won it have made football history."

With Italy boss Gian Piero Ventura also receiving an award, Vecchi spoke of his satisfaction at the number of Italian players in the Inter team that beat Lazio on Sunday night.

"There was a good number of Italian players on the pitch," he said. "People like Santon and Andreolli grew up at Inter and really care about wearing the shirt, as do the rest. The victory gives us breathing space and will help us to pick ourselves up. We hope to finish on a high in front of our fans."

Vecchi also looked to the future.

"The fact that there will be another Champions League place next season will help us to plan the season better," he said. "The names being linked to Inter for next season belong to very good coaches. This team needs a top coach.

"I’m a club man. I know my role and I want to thank the club for this experience, which I’m really enjoying. We’re discussing my extension with the Primavera and I would be delighted to work with my lads again ahead of another stimulating Primavera season."

Last but not least, Vecchi spoke about the controversy surrounding Gabriel Barbosa, who was unhappy at being an unused sub against Lazio.

"I welcome his comments today," said Vecchi. "He’s said sorry to his team-mates and the fans. He’s done the right thing. I’ll speak with him as his coach and then he’ll speak to his team-mates."
