16 May is not just another day for Inter and its fans. 16 May is a day full of history, memories, and incredible emotions. A special day marked by some extraordinary successes. Exactly 15 years ago, Inter won its 17th Scudetto: a title wanted, sought after, and pursued. The fourth consecutive championship.
After three years of success in Serie A, Inter started the new season with a new coach, José Mourinho, and a team full of stars. The saves of Julio Cesar in goal, the runs of Maicon and Maxwell on the wings, the playmaking of Cambiasso and Stankovic in midfield, the goals of Ibrahimovic, Balotelli, and Adriano and the determination of captain Javier Zanetti. Inter won the 2008/09 Scudetto at the end of a great journey that saw them leading the championship from the early stages. The title arrived on 16 May when they were at a training retreat at Appiano Gentile. On Matchday 36, Milan, second in the table, lost 2-1 at home to Udinese thus gifting the Tricolore to Inter, who were set to play the next day at San Siro against Siena. After the game in Udine, the celebrations began. The day after, the Nerazzurri played and won 3-0 (Cambiasso, Balotelli, Ibrahimovic) against the Tuscans, in an evening dedicated to celebrating the 17th Scudetto, the fourth consecutive one. The Biscione is once again the Champion.
The following year, Inter experienced a magical season, winning everything. The Treble crowned a long, magnificent journey. The week before the Champions League final, Inter played the last match of the league season. On 16 May 2010, the Nerazzurri faced Siena at the Artemio Franchi stadium. Mourinho's team had a two-point lead over Roma, who were second in the table and playing against Chievo in Verona.
In a tense, closed, and very complicated match, it took the touch of a champion to give Inter the Scudetto. In the 57' minute, Javier Zanetti set up Diego Milito in the box, who broke through Siena's defence and scored the only goal. A goal which decided the match and the league. The Prince scored 22 goals in Serie A, 30 overall in the season, also leaving his mark in the finals of the Coppa Italia and the Champions League. It was Inter's fifth consecutive Scudetto, the 18th in the Nerazzurri's history.
It's been 14 years since that day and 15 since the preceding Tricolore. Now the Scudetti total 20, and the Nerazzurri are ready to celebrate, once again in front of their fans.
