This will be the sixth meeting between Shakhtar Donetsk and Inter Milan in European competition, with the Ukrainian side still looking for their first victory in this fixture (D3 L2).
Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk have been drawn in the same UEFA Champions League group for a second consecutive season.
Both of their meetings in 2020-21 finished goalless, despite Inter attempting 32 shots and recording an expected goals total of 3.1 across the two games.
Shakhtar Donetsk have only scored one goal in their previous five meetings with Inter Milan, while they’ve failed to score in each of their most recent three, which have all come since the start of 2020 (0-5 in the UEFA Europa League and two goalless draws in last season’s UEFA Champions League).
Inter Milan are unbeaten in the UEFA Champions League against Ukrainian sides (W2 D4), with all six games coming in the group stage of the competition (W2 D2 v Dynamo Kyiv and D2 v Shakhtar Donetsk).
Shakhtar Donetsk have only won one of their last nine home games in the UEFA Champions League (D4 L4), however that victory did come in their most recent game in this run – 2-0 v Real Madrid in the group stage last season.
Shakhtar Donetsk manager Roberto De Zerbi has only won one his seven previous meetings with Inter Milan (D2 L4) - all of which came in Serie A - while he has seen his sides concede an average of two goals per game against them (14 in total).
Inter’s Lautaro Martínez had seven shots from inside the box against Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League last season, however he failed to score with all of them – no player had more attempts from inside the box against an opponent without finding the net in 2020-21.
Shakhtar Donetsk were beaten 0-2 by UEFA Champions League debutants Sheriff Tiraspol in their opening game of the 2021-22 campaign. Roberto De Zerbi’s side attempted 20 shots in the game – second only to Liverpool (23) on MD1 - yet only for a cumulative total of 0.85 xG.
Inter striker Edin Džeko has either scored or assisted in both of his previous appearances against Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League (one goal and one assist), including scoring the winning goal in his last game against them in the competition (1-0 while playing for Roma in March 2018).
Inter Milan were beaten 0-1 at home by Real Madrid on MD1, despite attempting 18 shots in the game. Their xG total of 2.5 was the highest of any team who failed to score in the opening round of the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League.
