UDINE - Inter suffered a setback today, falling to a 3-1 defeat to Udinese. At the Dacia Arena, Inzaghi’s side were beaten for the third time this league season and remain on twelve points after seven matchdays. Udinese, meanwhile, are flying high: following five consecutive wins, Sottil’s team temporarily sit top of the table on 16 points. It was a bad day for the Nerazzurri, who initially took the lead on the five-minute mark through Barella’s fantastic free-kick but then failed to control the match. An own goal from Skriniar saw the hosts draw level, before both Bijol and Arslan headed home late on to seal a 3-1 victory. It’s now time for the international break, after which Inter will return to the pitch when they face Roma on 1 October. Brozovic will be suspended for the game having picked up a yellow card this afternoon.
A tough blow, and it could have been so different considering how it started. But after Barella’s free-kick on the five-minute mark, there was an unlucky own goal, the yellow card for Brozovic and two late headed goals against the Nerazzurri, who struggled to take command of possession throughout.
The team just never really got going. On the other hand, Udinese, clearly boosted from four successive wins, looked very bright, despite conceding early on. Sottil’s side didn’t give an inch all over the pitch, constantly managing to turn situations in their favour and very happy to throw men forward. Deulofeu was in unstoppable form and, behind him, the midfielders looked to attack and get shots away. A sight that became all too familiar. Down the right, Pereyra caused plenty of problems, leading to Bastoni and Mkhitaryan getting booked. Inzaghi responded by replacing them with Dimarco and Gagliardini after 30 minutes.
Udinese equalised after Skriniar unluckily diverted the ball past Handanovic, and it effectively knocked the stuffing out of Inter. Inzaghi’s side struggled to put moves together and threaten the hosts’ goal. Dzeko fought for everything and was the man who, at the start of the second half, tried to add tempo to the Nerazzurri’s attack. He even found the net, but it was disallowed for offside. Inter tried to push forward for 15 minutes, but then Udinese’s physicality took hold. Sottil introduced fresh and lively faces off the bench, and it worked.
At times, Inter struggled to contain their opponents. Handanovic denied Lovic, while, in the 73rd minute, Udinese had four attempts at goal, hitting the post and being thwarted by two desperate blocks from Skriniar and D’Ambrosio. The Nerazzurri were rattled, failed to respond and then capitulated. First, Bijol headed home from a corner. And then, after Lautaro had missed an opportunity to equalise, Udinese netted a third through Arslan in stoppage time.
