Milan is black and blue. And so is Riyadh. Everything has turned black and blue, including the ribbons that will go on the Supercoppa Italiana trophy, and the confetti that fills the sky at the King Fahd International Stadium. The derby in Saudi Arabia, the 35th Supercoppa, was hardly a contest: 3-0, total domination from Inzaghi’s men. Inter’s seventh Supercoppa, and this was the most comfortable margin of victory. Dimarco, Dzeko, Lautaro were the three goalscorers in a beautiful, exceptional triumph. A perfect match, united players and a fantastic group that adds another trophy to the long and glorious history of the Nerazzurri.
There are many different ways to start a final. There are those who wait, those who analyse the opposition, those who reflect. And there are those who want to win so badly that they are unstoppable from the first minute. Inzaghi’s Inter came out of the blocks at breakneck speed. They had concentration, precise objectives, and a clear tactical plan. And so much ferocity. From kick-off, the Nerazzurri overwhelmed the AC Milan midfield. The Rossoneri were all over the place and Pioli’s side could do nothing to stop Inter. A fantastic start, one which led to the opening goal in the 10th minute. The perfect opening to a final. Dzeko gave it to Barella in space, whose lovely pass found Dimarco in the box and he beat Tatarusanu with a left-footed effort.
The goal was confirmed by VAR after an initial check for offisde which never came. Milan were struggling and tried to stay in the game, and only really created one chance: they gave the ball to Leao, for the Portuguese winger to work some of his magic. Onana saved his effort, and soon after Inter doubled their lead. Bastoni was the man with the assist on this occasion, as he found Dzeko in the box: from there the Bosnian was outstanding, as he cut inside past Tonali and slotted home into the bottom corner. 2-0, much to the delight of the Nerazzurri. For the next 10 minutes, Inzaghi’s side were flawless in every respect.
Tatarusanu made saves from Dzeko and Dimarco, and AC Milan failed to get a grip of the game. The Nerazzurri were everywhere, while AC Milan looked defeated and without an idea of what to do next. Even in defence, Inter were aggressive and played as a collective. After the break Milan improved, but it all came through Leao. Hernandez and Bennacer, along with Tonali, tried and failed to make an impact. Inter controlled the game, managed energy levels and waited to pounce on their opponents. In the 77th minute, Lautaro did so. “Il Toro” was outstanding; Skriniar launched it forward, Lautaro threw off Tomori and scored with the outside of his boot. The jubilant forward stood in front of the Inter fans, with the number 10 shirt in his hands. The third goal finished matters, with Rebic’s overhit cross off the bar the only chance to fall AC Milan’s way in the last 15 minutes. The six minutes of injury time only served to delay the Nerazzurri’s celebration.
