It was no ordinary day. On 18 May 2008, the final matchday of the season took place. It was a rainy day in Parma, where, at the Stadio Tardini, Inter were fighting to win the 16th Scudetto in their history. 16, like the number of years that have since passed.
In their centenary year, the Nerazzurri were aiming to win their third consecutive top-flight title. A huge objective which hadn't been achieved in the preceding games. On matchday 38, everything was still to be decided: Inter 82, Roma 81. The Nerazzurri's opponents were Parma, while the Giallorossi were up against Catania. Both of the title chasers were away from home against teams fighting to avoid the drop.
Vucinic gave Roma the lead in the eighth minute, while the match in Parma remained goalless for the entire first half. It meant that Roma were on course to become the Champions of Italy for more than an hour, and the Nerazzurri fans were certainly starting to feel the tension.
In the 51st minute, Zlatan Ibrahimovic came on to replace Cesar. The Swede, who was making his return after a long layoff due to a knee injury, made his mark, breaking the deadlock in the 62nd minute before doubling Inter's advantage 17 minutes later. A brace that clinched the Scudetto for the Nerazzurri. Unforgettable is the image of Dejan Stankovic on his knees celebrating in the pouring rain at the Tardini after such an exhausting season. And then there were the tears of joy of Esteban Cambiasso, who was injured and missed the decisive showdown.
Inter were the Champions of Italy for the 16th time, Parma were relegated to Serie B, and Catania came away with a point against second-place Roma to secure their top-flight status. In wet conditions in Parma, the Nerazzurri wrote an unforgettable page of history. It wasn't for the faint of heart, but Roberto Mancini's men displayed huge passion to triumph. They then celebrated their achievement together with the Inter supporters at San Siro.
16 years later, Inter now have 20 Scudetto titles to their name, and one star has become two. But one thing remains the same: the passion that binds the fans to this special team.
