— May 28th 2024On 28 May 1989, Inter beat Napoli 2-1 at San Siro to win their 13th Scudetto
A hot afternoon at the end of May: San Siro was up for a party, ready to explode with joy, a joy that had been missing for nine years, against a wonderful opponent: Diego Armando Maradona's Napoli, who wanted to dampen the enthusiasm of the thousands of Nerazzurri fans.
Matchday 30 in Serie A was played on 28 May 1989: Giovanni Trapattoni's Inter came into the match top of the table with 50 points, seven more than the Neapolitans, who were in second place. A match which, in the event of a victory, could give the Nerazzurri the Scudetto, the 13th in Inter's history: a defeat on the other hand would have reopened the way for Napoli to make a possible comeback. On an intense afternoon, full of thrills and emotions, Inter played and fought with all its might to win the Tricolor: Walter Zenga tried to block the Nerazzurri goal with his saves, but Napoli took the lead through Careca in the 36th minute.
The party looked far off, the objective more difficult: at half-time, Trapattoni sent on Alessandro Bianchi in place of Baresi to try to make a comeback. Nicola Berti led the charge, as always unstoppable and electrifying: he found the equaliser, with a great shot deflected by Fusi.
The finishing line was close, but not yet reached: for the Nerazzurri to triumph, they had to work until the 83rd minute. Lothar Matthäus lethal free-kick, with that immortal right foot of his, secured Scudetto number 13 to Inter with four games to spare and kicked off the Nerazzurri party at San Siro. A record of 58 points would arrive on the final day with the victory over Fiorentina.
One of the greatest successes in Inter's history: 35 years ago, emotions and happiness overwhelmed the Inter fans at San Siro, in Milano and throughout the world, exactly as it did in the season just ended.
