Inter's 2023/24 Champions League campaign is back underway, following last season's incredible run to the final. At the Reale Arena in San Sebastian, the Nerazzurri take on Real Sociedad on matchday 1 in Group D on Wednesday.
On the eve of the game, Head Coach Simone Inzaghi held his press conference at the stadium in Spain.
It was a great season last season, with high praise also coming from Guardiola. How do you feel about this year's Champions League? "Pep's words were really nice. We still have the final in Istanbul fresh in our memories; we know that one episode could have changed the outcome. We know how we played and felt our fans' warmth and support; a really positive memory has stayed with us. But it's time to restart a new journey, in a fiery atmosphere, in this stadium, against a strong opponent who would have been better to avoid. But we'll play the game, we want to try again this year."
Calhanoglu won't play. "He's a big loss, without doubt. Also Cuadrado will miss out, as well as Sensi and Agoumé, who aren't in the squad list. We still have many options, though: Asllani is one of these. He's a good player and many clubs wanted him, but we believe strongly in him. He's already given some important performances. I'll make my decisions tomorrow." There's enthusiasm, but is there a risk following the derby? "We've watched the game back: we did many good things, and some that could be improved. We know that it was a great night for everyone associated with the Club. But it's gone, and we must now focus on the Champions: it'll be an intense game and a very difficult test. Inter look a different animal this year. Why is that? "From last year's journey, but also from the one before in the Champions League, we've made great strides and done some great things, as this Club deserves. Last season was really something special, and I repeat, the love from the fans after the final will never be forgotton. But the whole run, starting from the group stages, was done well. Now, we must restart again: if we put 'we' before 'I' and work as a team then great things can be achieved." What's your view on Real Sociedad? "They are a well-organised side. Last year, they played a different system. I saw them against Real Madrid where they changed their defensive formation. They have quality, and we'll need to be at our best." Have you already chosen the team?? "Yes, but I'll tell the players tomorrow." Would you accept a draw? "You can't say: we know it'll be an intense and tough game, with technical players who work hard. We'll need to be united, and defend and attack as a team."
