— Nov 29th 2023Character, tenacity and pride: the thoughts of some of the figures who starred in Inter's comeback draw with Benfica
At the stadio Da Luz in Lisbon, Inter didn't give up and came from 3-0 down at half-time to draw 3-3 with Benfica. Inzaghi's men could have won it, too, with Barella hitting the woodwork at the end of a second half played with real pride and character. Here's what some of the key figures had to say after the game:
“It’s the first time I’ve started with Arnautovic, but he’s a great player and I felt good. We went 3-0 down but showed real determination to produce a comeback as a team and with the mentality of champions. We made a few mistakes and conceded due to a lack of concentration. However, we have players who are full of character. We’re a team of champions and always focus on winning. I’ve played here for a number of years and think we can still improve, but we’re on the right track. ”
Alexis Sanchez
“It was an honour to captain the side this evening. They caused us problems in the first half, especially given our approach to the game. We made too many mistakes and conceded too many counter-attacks. They punished us to the maximum, but it’s only normal at this level when you make errors. ”
Stefan De Vrij
“We got caught out at the start; there were certain first-half situations that we then corrected after the restart, but this can happen in football. You need to believe. We were angry at half-time, and nobody wanted to lose. We then came back out for the second half with the desire to produce a comeback, and that’s exactly what we did.”
Yann Bisseck
“We were well off the pace in the first half. There were a lot of changes to the team, but that can’t be an excuse. We then discussed things and returned to the pitch with the right mindset, producing a great performance. It was a question of mental attitude, and playing so many games mustn’t give us an excuse. Everyone in this group is strong, and we know the qualities we possess. We did well in the second half and showed what we’re all about.”
