Lautaro, 28 goals in 2023: "Credit to my teammates"
Team
— Dec 9th 2023The Nerazzurri captain's comments after the win over Udinese
A warrior, a goalscorer, a true example to follow: Lautaro Martinez produced a spectacular performance in Inter's resounding victory over Udinese, rounding things off with a brilliant strike. After regaining possession in the middle of the park, he charged forward and let fly to score his 28th league goal in 2023. This represents an Inter record in terms of number of goals from an individual player in a calendar year since 2000, one he shares with Diego Milito (2012) and Christian Vieri (2001).
This is what El Toro had to say after the game:
“I hadn’t scored a goal at San Siro in a while and I tried to get back on the scoresheet in every way possible. I hit the post and was denied when the penalty incident occurred, but then I had a go from distance. We know that it’s a requirement for Inter to win; this is the most important thing. For my goal, I lost the ball on the counter but won it back and then dribbled forward. I saw some space and shot, and I’m happy it went in. This year, we’ve been working a lot on winning the ball back by pressing; this is important so that more opportunities arise. I don’t know how many more goals I’ll score in 2023, but I hope that many more are around the corner. However, the important thing is to always help out your teammates. I’m scoring a lot of goals, but this can also be put down to what my teammates allow me to do. I’ve found the net a lot thanks to them, and we need to continue on this track. We’re not really interested in who scores; the important thing is to pick up three points. We’ve still got great room for improvement and always need to strive to do more and improve. This great Club needs to get used to winning titles and playing finals; we’ve been doing this for a long time now and want to continue on this path. I’m proud of this team.”
