Right foot, left foot, headers: an analysis of Lautaro's 100 (+2) goals in Serie A

— Feb 29th 2024From his first, a header, versus Cagliari at San Siro to the brace against Lecce and the goal against Atalanta: a complete goalscorer
A hundred ways to score: against Lecce, Lautaro Martinez reached and surpassed the prestigious milestone of 100 goals in Serie A, reaching 102 against Atalanta. Toro has come a long way since his arrival at Inter in the summer of 2018, collecting trophies and successes, and writing important pages in recent Nerazzurri history. The current Inter captain has become a ruthless striker, a real goal machine, capable of scoring in many different ways. Let's look more closely at his 100 (+2) goals scored in the Italian league.
HOW HE SCORES
El Toro's favorite foot is his right: nevertheless, Lautaro is the only player to have scored more than 15 goals with both the right foot, left foot and headers over the last six Serie A seasons. More specifically, the Argentine has scored 60 goals with his favorite foot, 24 with his left foot and 18 with his head. His first goal in Serie A, which came in Inter vs. Cagliari on 29 September 2018 was a header, while his 100th goal against Lecce was scored with his right foot. Even with his left foot, Lautaro has scored some unforgettable goals, like the one that gave Inter an injury-time victory over Napoli in 2018/19.
WHERE HE SCORES FROM
A predator in the box, Lautaro has scored 91 of his league goals from inside the 18-yard box. Eleven of these have come from penalties, including his first derby goal back on 17 March 2019. On the other hand, eleven goals have been scored by Lautaro from outside the area in Serie A: his longest finish from distance was on 28 July 2020, a 31.8 metre rocket that was crucial in giving Inter a home win over Napoli.
WHEN HE SCORES
One of Lautaro Martinez's main qualities is his ability to always find himself ready, in every game and against any opponent. Specifically, one stat highlights this characteristic in the Nerazzurri captain: El Toro's 102 goals are spread over the 90 minutes in a similar way, with a higher number in the closing stages of games, when he has proved decisive in the final result. Between the 76th minute and the final whistle, Lautaro has scored 22 goals, more than a fifth of his total.

MULTIPLE GOALS
Like all great strikers, Lautaro Martinez is a multiple scoring specialist. El Toro has score more than one goal in 17 league fixtures: 14 braces, 2 hat-tricks and a four-goal haul once. The latter dates back to last September, when in the home game against Salernitana Lautaro became the first player in Serie A history to score four goals after coming off the bench. His first multiple goals in the Italian top flight dates back to 20 October 2019, when Inter won 4-3 at Sassuolo. For his first hat-trick in Serie A we need to go back to January 3 2021: a 6-2 victory against Crotone at San Siro. On that occasion, Lautaro scored a perfect hat-trick, scoring one with his right foot, one with his left and one with his head.
TEAMS ON THE RECEIVING END
In the last six Serie A seasons, El Toro has scored against 27 different teams: Genoa and ChievoVerona are the only sides he has failed to put the ball in the back of the net. His favourite victim is Salernitana, with ten goals, followed by Cagliari (nine). Completing the top spots are Atalanta, Fiorentina, Hellas Verona and Lazio. Against these sides, he has scored six times.
