— Feb 20th 2024The thoughts of Lautaro, De Vrij, Carlos Augusto and Mkhitaryan following Inter's 1-0 victory
Arnautovic bagged a 79th-minute winner as Inter beat Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 tie between the sides. This is what some of those who were involved in tonight's 1-0 victory at San Siro had to say after the game:
“Tonight was a vital game for us, and the fact we’ve come away with a win is very important. We could have scored more goals, but we’re happy with the result. I consoled Arnautovic after his missed chances because these are difficult moments for a striker, but I’m delighted that he found the net because he deserved it. We’ve matured a lot since last year because we know how to manage games and difficult moments. Those who joined in the summer have settled in well. We need to continue to work in this manner to help Inter reach new heights.”
Lautaro Martinez
“We knew that it wouldn’t be easy; Atletico are a strong and well-organised side who play good football. We produced a good performance, created several chances and didn’t give much away. We’re happy with the win. They’re a well-prepared and compact team, but we played as a unit and dug in when we needed to. It’s a win we really wanted to achieve and which gives us confidence as we look to progress to the next round. It won’t be easy, but we’re confident and need to carry on going down this path. We’re aware of our qualities and want to show how strong we are in every single match. ”
Stefan De Vrij
“We really wanted this win and could have made more of our chances. We’ve come away with a crucial win, but it’ll be difficult at their ground; we’ll need to be focused and play well. We’re a great group and are all friends. Those who don’t always play work hard during the week to ensure that they’re ready. I’m happy for Arna, who really deserved his goal. He’s an incredible guy.”
Carlos Augusto
“It doesn’t count for much because there’s another game to play. We tried to create chances and were up against a really strong side. It was difficult to score, but we managed to do so. We need to go and win in Madrid as we look to repeat what we did last year. We want to be involved in the final again. I’m happy that we’ve won, but I’m also aware that there’s a second leg to come. ”
Henrikh Mkhitaryan
