They’re known as the twelfth man. They spur you on during the most complicated moments; they help you find energy that you thought you didn’t have; they allow you to overcome obstacles through sheer heart, even when it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be your day. They are, of course, the fans. Today, over 69,000 supporters were at San Siro, driving the team forward. A constant presence, a decisive presence. It was a tense affair where Inter often lacked precision, even if there was an improvement in the second half. A moment of inspiration was needed to transform a draw into a win, and, with the Meazza helping to suck the ball in, that came through the boot of Brozovic from Barella’s cross. Winning in the 89th minute: isn’t it just fantastic? It wasn’t a scintillating display, but the three points are very, very important.
A man-marking system across the whole pitch. Torino worked to suffocate and inhibit the Nerazzurri, who failed to register a single shot on target until the 65th minute. In the end, Inter managed three compared to seven, which brings us on to another point: Handanovic made a key contribution to today’s victory. Indeed, he made several key saves in both the opening period and the second half, allowing Inzaghi’s men to remain on level terms when the Granata, and especially Vlasic, managed to slip between the lines. The first half was, on the whole, dull, with Inter seemingly lacking in energy.
In the second half, Torino generally had the better chances. Handanovic denied Sanabria before also keeping out Rodriguez’s free-kick. Inter needed to believe, and they gradually started to play higher up the pitch, trying to put dangerous moves together. Lautaro was a key figure up front as he looked to inspire his teammates. Inter’s No.10 fought for every ball, showed some excellent touches, recovered possession and also came close to scoring. There was a scare in the 83rd minute as Radonjic let fly, but Handanovic was there again. It remained 0-0, and there was still hope that a winner could be found. Inter started to lay siege on the Torino goal, boosted by the substitutes’ fresh energy.
Then, with 89 minutes on the clock, Barella lifted in a cross for Brozovic, who met it on the volley and delicately and elegantly placed it into the net. Decisive. San Siro erupted and, helped by the noise of the crowd, Inter were able to see out the match comfortably. 1-0, Brozovic’s goal was enough.
