MILAN - In front of a 75,000 packed out San Siro, Inter were beaten in a defeat that is almost impossible to explain. The home side dominated the game, with numerous chances created, but fell to their fourth defeat of the season, losing 2-1 to Roma. It was a strange evening. The stage was set beautifully with a roaring crowd excited by the prospect of a home win but who jeered at the end. Inter had a goal disallowed, hit the bar, wasted several chances and in the end, couldn't find the equaliser. In total, they had 15 attempts, fought for 97 minutes, but ended up on the wrong side of the result. After Dimarco's opening goal, Roma came from behind through Dybala's first-half equaliser and a Smalling header after 75 minutes. They were two unexpected blows, in a match that was controlled by Inzaghi's side. After eight games played Inter now have twelve points, with Barcellona in the Champions League on the horizon.
Asllani lined up for the first time replacing the suspended Brozovic, and connected well with his teammates despite Pellegrini marking him closely. Roma started off cagey and cautious looking to get the ball forward through Zaniolo and Dybala. Inter relied on Dzeko, who worked the sides well linking up with the mezzala. The San Siro exploded after ten minutes when Dzeko fired home but his exquisite finish was chalked off by VAR, after the Bosnian was marginally found to be in an offside position after Lautaro's touch.
Inter were hungry and good on the eye. On the half-hour mark, Barella cut inside and played a perfectly-placed ball through for Dimarco, whose right-footed strike was forceful enough to get past Rui Patricio, who may have done better: 1-0 and a well-deserved lead, and a first home goal for the number 32.
But the lead didn't last long: after Barella failed to get the ball under control, Roma set off through Spinazzola. He sent a ball over to the far post for Dybala, who hit it first time on the volley to make it 1-1. It was a goal out of nothing. The half ended with Lautaro on the floor, after being grounded from a long ball, but Massa waved played on.
After a good start to the second half for the away side, Inter once again took control of possession and the action, pressing forward at every opportunity. Lautaro hit one over the bar, Calhanoglu was unlucky hitting the bar from his free-kick, and Asllani's great long-range attempt just flashed past the post. The atmosphere inside the San Siro was rising, waiting for deserved goal. Instead, after 75 minutes, the sucker punch arrived. From Pellegrini's free-kick - after Mancini was fouled by Dzeko, who contested the decision - Smalling came in at the back post to head home.
It was a bitter blow for Inter who pushed everyone forward. Inzaghi played all of his cards bringing on 17-year-old Valentin Carboni for his senior debut. Bellanova fired a right-footed shot over, as Roma looked to counter. The Giallorossi dragged the game out until the 97th minute wasting time and breaking up the rhythm of the play at every opportunity, before the final whistle came to the disappointment of the home crowd.
