Inter held at home by Cagliari

Inter were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Cagliari at San Siro. It’s a bit of a disappointing result for Inzaghi’s men, especially because they dominated for long spells and ended up being pegged back twice by the Sardinians, who are battling to avoid the drop. Nevertheless, the Nerazzurri have maintained their 14-point advantage over second-place AC Milan, who they’ll face next on Monday 22 April.
The Nerazzurri took a twelfth-minute lead after some nice combination play: having been picked out by Barella, Sanchez rolled it across for Thuram to convert from close range. Inzaghi’s men were dictating play, but, with the Nerazzurri unable to add to their advantage, Cagliari were still in the game and threatened on more than one occasion through Luvumbo and Shomurodov.
With 64 minutes on the clock, the visitors levelled the match through Shomurodov following a knockdown by Luvumbo. The Nerazzurri needed to put their foot on the accelerator again, and they managed to restore their lead through Calhanoglu’s 74th-minute penalty. However, in the 83rd minute, Viola fired past Sommer in dubious circumstances after what looked like a handball by Lapadula in the build-up. The final few minutes were rather frantic, and there were opportunities at either end, but the scoreline remained the same: 2-2 at San Siro.
