Inter's European campaign began with a defeat, with Bayern Munich running out 2-0 winners at San Siro. The Germans scored a goal in each half, with Sané having a hand in both. It was a bitter evening at San Siro, with the visitors dictating play for long spells, even if Inter did have their chances. In the other match in Group C, Barcelona ran out 5-1 winners over Viktoria Plzen, who the Nerazzurri will face in the Czech Republic next Tuesday.

Bayern made a bright start, putting moves together and pinning Inter back. Their first attempts were from distance, but Onana, on his Nerazzurri debut, remained alert. Selected in defence, D'Ambrosio made a notable contribution early on, also trying to make a nuisance of himself in attack. However, Inter fell behind in the 25th minute: Sané was picked out in behind, and the German managed to control the ball, dribble past Onana and place it into an empty net. The Nerazzurri struggled to come up with a response, despite Dzeko’s best efforts to inspire the team. Bayern were the more threatening side in the final stages of the opening period.

Spurred on by San Siro, Inter displayed real determination at the start of the second half. D'Ambrosio once again made his presence felt in attack, volleying over the bar, while Dzeko fired straight at Neuer from a good position. The Bosnian then had a header blocked. However, in the 65th minute, Bayern struck the decisive blow. After combining with Coman in the box, Sané managed to beat Onana via an intervention from D'Ambrosio, who was unsuccessful in his attempt to clear the ball.

Inter had been left with a mountain to climb, and Inzaghi tried to shake things up to stir his side into life once again. Correa could have given Inter hope in the 83rd minute, but he dragged his attempt wide. It was the team’s last opportunity on a disappointing evening.
