— Feb 28th 2024A brilliant display from the Nerazzurri, who extend their lead at the top of the table thanks to goals from Darmian, Lautaro, Dimarco and Frattesi
Inter produced another special performance to beat Atalanta 4-0 in the rearranged matchday 21 clash between the sides and move twelve points clear of second-place Juventus. 26 matches played, 22 wins, 67 goals and just twelve conceded.
The game finished 4-0, but it wasn’t always one-way traffic, at least in the first half. Atalanta pressed all over the pitch, got at Inter and scored through De Keteleare early on, but it was ruled out for a Miranchuk handball in the build-up. At the other end of the pitch, the Nerazzurri also had a goal chalked off: after latching onto a long ball over the top from Bastoni, Barella rounded Carnesecchi and found the net, but the linesman’s flag went up. Midway through the opening period, Inter put their foot on the accelerator. Lautaro missed from a good position following another fine Bastoni pass (25’) and was then involved in the opening goal just a minute later: Carnesecchi narrowly beat the Argentine to Mkhitaryan’s through ball, but Darmian was on hand to fire into an empty net. Three minutes later, Carnesecchi used his legs to stop Darmian scoring his second of the evening. Inter kept on pushing: in the 40th minute, Lautaro struck the bar with a powerful effort. He didn’t miss with his next attempt, however, bending home in brilliant fashion with his left foot from outside the area. What a finish.
Atalanta returned to the pitch for the second half with the aim of getting back into it, but Inter soon struck a huge blow: a Dumfries cross hit Scalvini on the arm and, after a long VAR review, a penalty was awarded. Lautaro saw his spot-kick saved by the goalkeeper, but Dimarco converted on the follow-up to make it 3-0.
The Nerazzurri fans were loving what they were seeing as the team continued to entertain. In the 72nd minute, Frattesi, who had been on the pitch for ten minutes, found the net again: Sanchez sent in a free-kick for the Italian, who headed home at the near post. Inter were home and dry, although there was the disappointment of seeing Frattesi leave the pitch due to an injury he sustained when he scored. The rest of the match was plain sailing for the Nerazzurri, who recorded their eleventh consecutive victory since the start of 2024.
