Inter win their final home fixture of the season to qualify for next season's Champions League

— May 27th 2023Lukaku, Barella and Lautaro with the goals as the Nerazzurri beat Atalanta 3-2
An Inter side that doesn’t want to stop dreaming. Hungry and determined, the Nerazzurri took to the pitch aiming to back up their Coppa Italia triumph with a win in the league. Two trophies won, a Champions League final to come and now, thanks to tonight’s success over Atalanta, a guaranteed spot in the next edition of Europe’s elite competition.
Lukaku, Barella and Lautaro Martinez were the men who got the goals this evening, but it was a real team effort: from Brozovic’s standout moments and Bastoni’s reading of the play through to Acerbi’s defensive display and Calhanoglu’s efforts at goal… everyone did their part, including those who came on during the match.
Inter raced out of the traps, taking the lead after just 40 seconds. Lukaku and Lautaro combined, and the former found himself through on goal with only Sportiello to beat. The Belgian showed brilliant composure, dribbling around the goalkeeper and dispatching the ball into the net to make it 1-0. The Nerazzurri fans were still celebrating when Barella bagged a second just two minutes later: Dimarco was denied twice by Sportiello, but the Atalanta shot-stopper could do nothing about Nicolò’s subsequent volley from close range.
Inter were fired up and continued to attack. Calhanoglu let fly, Dimarco had an excellent free-kick saved and Lukaku tried to add to his tally. However, the visitors responded in the 36th minute through Pasalic, who fired home after Inter had failed to clear an Atalanta corner.
LuLa almost took centre stage after the restart, but Lautaro, on the slide, couldn’t quite connect with the Belgian’s ball towards the far post. El Toro continued to threaten and, in the 77th minute, netted Inter’s third. It was a lovely Nerazzurri move, with Lukaku protecting the ball and playing a fantastic through ball to Brozovic, who rolled it across for the Argentine to finish.
Atalanta then scored in stoppage time, but they weren’t about to ruin the Inter party: Simone Inzaghi’s side bid farewell to San Siro this season with a fantastic victory, much to the delight of the record-breaking Nerazzurri fans, who will be watching Champions League football again next term.
