The Milan derby is fast approaching in the 21st Serie A matchday of the season. On Sunday 5 February at 20:45 CET, the Nerazzurri will take on AC Milan at San Siro in the 235th meeting between the two teams. The countdown is underway... to get ready for the match, here are 10 quiz questions on the derby:
1) Which current Inter player has scored the most goals (six) in derbies against AC Milan? With the goal he scored in the last Super Cup match, Lautaro Martinez became the team's top scorer in derbies against AC Milan. In an Inter shirt, he has netted six goals against the Rossoneri in all competitions, the first in the match on 17 March 2019. Only against Cagliari (eight) has he scored more goals in an Inter shirt. If he scores this weekend, the Argentine would move to seven goals, becoming the second highest non-Italian goalscorer in Inter's history in the Milan derby, after Stefano Nyers (11). Behind him is Lukaku (five).
2) The Milan derby with the highest number of goals finished 6-5 to Inter: in which season did it happen? At the start of the 1949-1950 season, Inter won what will forever remain in history as the most incredible #derbyMilan ever. To this day, it still stands as the derby with the most goals scored. 6-5 to the Nerazzurri. AC Milan got off to a lightning start, and were ahead 4-1 after just 19 minutes of play: in the 7th minute it was 2-0 to the Rossoneri (Candiani's brace, a former Inter player), then Nyers' goal and those of Nordahl and Liedholm. The Nerazzurri's reaction was incredible: Amadei, Nyers again and Amadei again brought the scores level at 4-4. In the 58th minute, Benito Veleno Lorenzi put the Nerazzurri ahead for the first time in the game: 5-4, before Annovazzi equalised a minute later. It was Amadei again, in the 64th minute, who scored a hat-trick and the winner, securing an Inter victory.
3) Story time: on the eve of a derby Mario Corso had recounted that on the bus he always sat in the first seat on the left, and before entering the pitch... The unforgettable Mario Corso, recalling the excitement of the derby, had recounted that after warming up in the gym or in the tunnel, he always touched the first step of the dressing room three times before stepping out on to the pitch at the "Meazza": "It was something I always did and I'd say it worked quite well. Tension for the derby? After the first pass, tension disappeared and we only thought about the match".
4) Who are Inter's two top scorers in the derby against AC Milan? Giuseppe Meazza with 13 goals (12 with Inter and 1 with the Rossoneri) and Istvan Nyers (11 ).
5) Since 2012, three Nerazzurri have scored in a league derby in the first five minutes of play. Who are they? Walter Samuel scored in the 3rd minute of Milan 0-1 Inter, on 7 October 2012, with a header that won the game for the Nerazzurri. Matias Vecino broke the deadlock on 17 March 2019, a game won by Inter 3-2 at home to AC Milan. Lautaro Martinez scored 181 seconds after kick off on 19 April 2022, and scored the goal that kickstarted the victory on 21 February 2021.
6) Which Inter coach has won the most derbies (eight), in all competitions? Helenio Herrera, Inter coach between '60 and '68 and for part of the season in 1973/1974, won eight derbies: the most resounding successes were the 5-2 in March 1965 (Jair, Domenghini, Corso, 2 Mazzola) and the 4-0 in April 1967 (Cappellini, Facchetti, Suarez, Domenghini).
7) Which Nerazzurri player has the most appearances in derby history? Javier Zanetti has played 47 derbies in an Inter shirt, three more than Giuseppe Bergomi. Zanetti scored one derby goal, in the 2-2 draw in the '98-'99 season.
8) Who has scored the most recent braces in derbies? Il Toro, Lautaro Martinez, has scored two braces against AC Milan: the first on 21 February 2021 in the 3-0 win where Lukaku also scored, the second in the Coppa Italia match in April 2022, again 3-0, this time finished off with Gosens' goal.
9) Since 2012, all the derbies won 1-0 (five in total) have been decided by an Argentinian player, except one: which player scored? On 15 January 2012 it was Diego Milito's goal that won the derby. The following season, again at home to AC Milan, the derby was decided after three minutes by another Argentine: Walter Samuel. A year later and it was the same old story against AC Milan, Palacio winning it with a backheel finish in the 88th minute. The most recent 1-0 victory was decided by Mauro Icardi, scoring towards the end of the match on 21 October 2018. To find the only one-goal victory since 2012 that has not been decided by an Argentine, we go back to 13 September 2015, where Colombian Guarin's left-footed drive proved decisive in the 163rd derby.
