Inter suffered their seventh defeat of the season, losing 1-0 to Bologna at the Dall'Ara. It was a difficult match, with the conditions not making things any easier. The game was decided by Orsolini in the 76th minute, after which the Nerazzurri failed to find the energy to respond. After their midweek excursions against Porto in the Champions League, Inzaghi's side have suffered a setback and remain on 47 points in the league. Rain, a wet pitch, the ball slowing down and, at times, splashing off the turf. The conditions were far from ideal, meaning energy, balance and a large amount of focus were required. Inter didn't make a great start and struggled for large spells of the first half against an intense Bologna side. The hosts thought they'd taken the lead on the twelve-minute mark as Barrow fired home with his left foot, but, after a VAR review, it was correctly ruled out due to Dominguez's offside position.
The Nerazzurri had survived a big scare and almost fell behind again in the 18th minute: after Onana had kept out Cambiaso's attempt, Soriano hit the bar on the follow-up. Inter were under the cosh but didn't succumb: on the contrary, Gosens - a real standout performer today - and his teammates started to play higher up the pitch, aiming to get the forwards involved. Inter's first shot on target came in the 39th minute, immediately after which Lautaro headed Bastoni's cross narrowly wide with Skorupski beaten.
There were some positive signs at the start of the second half. Gosens managed to pick out Calhanoglu, who slipped as he shot and, as a result, failed to keep the ball down. Inter were looking much better but needed to remain on high alert because Bologna, with their direct attacking play, remained a threat. In the 53rd minute, Darmian made a brilliant block to thwart Soriano. Inzaghi turned to his bench, bringing on Acerbi, Dzeko, Barella and D'Ambrosio. Looking to make an impact, Dzeko let fly with a fierce volley, but Skorupski was in place to save. Bologna, meanwhile, stayed calm as they tried to figure out a way to win the match. They did so by taking advantage of a mistake by Inter in the build-up: after Barrow had been denied by Onana, the Nerazzurri gave the ball away and Schouten was the beneficiary as he sent Orsolini through on goal with a perfectly timed pass. The latter did the rest, thumping into the net to make it 1-0.
After falling behind, Inter, who seemed devoid of energy, failed to muster a response, despite the best efforts of Gosens. Carboni came on for Brozovic, but the scoreline didn't change.
