Football is a strange an unpredictable sport, Inter are an incredible team. A unique one, too, which is also an adjective that could be used to describe the match at Camp Nou. It truly was an epic showdown, and the final 3-3 scoreline gives Inter every chance of progressing to the last 16. On Wednesday 26 October, the Nerazzurri will face Viktoria Plzen at San Siro. A win would see them progress from their group.
Quite simply, everything happened. Inter fell behind before turning things around thanks to goals from Barella and Lautaro. Barcelona piled on the pressure, with Lewandowski levelling matters in the 82nd minute. Then came Gosens' goal with 89 minutes on the clock, and the Nerazzurri were seemingly on their way to victory. But Lewandowski equalised again in stoppage time, during which Asllani had an incredible opportunity on the 95-minute mark and Gosens was denied at the death. There's a bit of regret, but there's also a lot of pride.
A red-hot atmosphere in a packed-out stadium that was ready to spur Barcelona on to a much-needed three points in the race to make it to the last 16. Inter knew what awaited them, and they knew that they'd have to be compact and confident in their play and look to attack their opponents' weaknesses. This would also involve showing character on the ball. The match kicked off and initially played out as predicted. Indeed, the hosts took charge of possession, but Inter stood firm and also posed a real threat.
While it's true that Lewandowski had the first big chance – his header was cleared off the line by Mkhitaryan – Inter almost stunned Camp Nou in the 17th minute. It was a matter of inches: Calhanoglu played in a free-kick that was met by Dzeko, whose effort from close range hit the underside of the bar and bounced out, with De Vrij then unable to convert the rebound. The Nerazzurri kept on pushing: Mkhitaryan saw his snapshot smothered by Ter Stegen, while, after some great work by Barella, the German goalkeeper also denied Dumfries.
Inter had thus failed to inflict damage at the right moment, allowing the Blaugrana to surge forward after the half-hour mark. Several chances came the hosts' way, with Sergi Roberto, Raphinha and Pedri all having efforts, but Onana was there to intervene. Then, in the 40th minute, the opener was scored: Raphinha managed to pull the ball back from the corner flag and find Sergi Roberto, who played it towards the centre, and Dembélé was there to make it 1-0. The second half was played at an incredible tempo as both teams gave as good as they got. Shortly after the restart, Bastoni played a fantastic ball in behind, with Barella controlling it with his thigh and smashing it into the roof of the net. 1-1 and the stadium had been silenced. Knowing what was at stake, fear took hold at Camp Nou, and the crowd had every right to be fearful. Because Inter were playing in a ferocious manner and knew exactly when to attack. In the 63rd minute, Calhanoglu found Lautaro, who, after getting the ball under control, let fly with a strike that hit both posts before crossing the line. Ter Stegen was beaten, Inter were in front, Barcelona had it all to do. Xavi's side tried everything, with ball after ball being sent into the Inter box and the Nerazzurri switching to a 5-4-1 formation to try and keep their opponents at bay. They managed to do this until the 82nd minute, when Lewandowski fired home via a deflection off Bastoni. However, Inter didn't cave and, with Barcelona in all-out attack mode, even managed to take the lead: Onana picked out Lautaro with a wonderful pass forward, and the Argentine splendidly rolled it across for Gosens, who did the rest. 3-2 to Inter and unbridled joy.
However, there was still a long way to go. Six minutes of stoppage time, in fact. Lewandowski netted again in the 92nd minute, and Barcelona went on the hunt for a winner. But it was Inter who came closest to making it 4-3 as Asllani failed to win the one-on-one battle with Ter Stegen. Then, Gosens forced the Barcelona shot-stopper into a 97th-minute stop, the final incident of an incredible match.
