Inter's European journey ends here. Inzaghi's side were defeated on penalties by Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16. The Nerazzurri, who had a 1-0 slender lead from the first leg at San Siro, took the lead in the 33rd minute thanks to Dimarco's goal. But Griezmann equalised immediately after in the 35th minute.
In the second half, Atletico pushed forward looking for a winner, while Inter spurned some excellent chances, with Thuram close to scoring the qualifying goal. In the closing stages, however, the Spaniards put everything in it: Depay hit the post, before findind the goal in the 90th minute to take the game into extra-time.
Inter played better in extra-time and had a couple of good opportunities, but it wasn't to be and penalties proved fatal: Sanchez missed, Sommer saved immediately, but errors from Klaassen and Lautaro condemned the team to elimination.
